[edit] Republic vs. official
This is not the official flag of NF. This is the old republic of NF flag. I propose moving this to Flag of Newfoundland (Republic). Dlodge 05:45, 5 January 2007 (UTC) Or Flag of Republic of Newfoundland - but this implies Newfoundland exists as a republic. Dlodge 18:30, 5 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] name of the Newfoundland tricolor
The proper name of the 1843 flag is the Newfoundland tricolor, or informally "the Pink, White, and Green". "Republic of Newfoundland flag" is a misnomer. There is and never was any such thing as a "Republic of Newfoundland", it's just a slogan that was invented to go on souvenir T-shirts with the flag some years ago, and some people have been calling it that ever since. See John FitzGerald's article in The Independent. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 69.46.127.11 (talk) 18:31, 5 January 2007 (UTC).
The "Republic of Newfoundland" slogan was first printed on a T-Shirt featuring the 1843 tricolor flag, encircled by the words "Republic of Newfoundland" in 1982. It was produced by Snuffy Jackson, the owner of the Harbour City General Store in St. John's, Newfoundland. The inventor's intention was to celebrate the independent nature of Newfoundlanders. Newfoundland never existed as a Republic, but the production of this T-Shirt gave way to the false thinking that Newfoundland had been a Republic and that the Republic Flag was the 1843 tricolor. http//www.harbourcitygeneralstore.comSnuffy Jackson 22:53, 6 July 2007 (UTC)
