Flatspace is an "indie" game for Microsoft Windows released in 2003, in which the player assumes the role of a spaceship captain. A sequel, Flatspace II: The Rise of the Scarrid, was released in 2005.
Both versions use 3D graphics with a top-down view. They combine features from space simulators like Frontier: Elite 2 (optional missions that earn money, trading) and roguelikes such as NetHack (randomized setup). Flatspace II adds guilds and an alien race.
Play is notably open-ended: activities available include trading, missions, exploration, bounty hunting, space piracy, and police work.
