Flag of Mide
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The flag and arms of the medieval Irish province of Mide (Meath) consist of a monarch seated on a throne. [1]
The arms reflect the fact that Tara, seat of the legendary High King of Ireland, was in Mide.[1] The symbolism is derived from iconography rather than classical heraldry.[1] Medieval royal seals portrayed a majesty on the obverse and the arms of the sovereign on the reverse. The sceptre represented power and the outstretched right hand justice; both of which were royal prerogatives.[1]
The arms of Mide were apparently used at one time as the arms of Ireland, i.e. a majesty on a sable background, the provincial arms being displayed on an azure field.[1]
The arms are still used by the Meath GAA, but the Meath county council has adopted a new design.[2]
