Flag of Dorset
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The English county of Dorset, like other counties, has no official flag. A public consultation is currently taking place with the public submitting ideas for a Dorset flag to Dorset County Council. An independent campaign to see a flag known as the 'Dorset Cross' endorsed is also taking place.

[edit] Background
In 2007, an Armorial Banner of the Dorset County Council Arms appeared for commercial sale and prompted calls for a Dorset flag to be officially created[1]. The councils initial response was to reject these calls saying it had no authority to create a flag, based on the unitary status of Bournemouth and Poole Borough Councils[2]. Following this, an independent campaign by Dorset resident David White was began to promote a flag conceived by Dorset expatriate Stephen Coombs, known as the 'Dorset Cross'. With public interest growing, John Peake, the chairman of Dorset County Council asked the Dorset public to submit other ideas for a Dorset flag through the local press[3].
South, West and central Dorset newspaper, the Dorset Echo had been publishing the entries as they were submitted[4]. Despite the newspapers indication that the contest was over[5], Sally Northeast, the Press Relations Manager of the council indicated that this was not the case and the contest would stay open until the end of June. A panel will shortlist with public voting on a flag shortly after this[6].
[edit] Dorset County Council Armorial Banner
With three red lions passant with a red Fleur de lys at the bottom, all on a white background, the design is a armorial banner of the Dorset County Council arms. Strictly speaking, the arms only represent Dorset County Council, rather than Dorset as a whole and officially, permission should be sought to use them[7]. It was the first commercially available flag to the Dorset public.
[edit] The Dorset Cross
Conceived by Stephen Coombs in 2005 and rendered by David White in 2006, 'The Dorset Cross', (formerly known as 'St Wite's Cross') is the only other commercially available flag. It has a white cross, bordered in red on a gold field, the colours of which can be found on the arms of Dorset County Council. The name does not signify any status as endorsed, but was chosen by the designers as more encompassing than the previous name[8].
