[edit] Family origins
The first known member of the family was an obscure man called Martin, who appears to have died prior to 1085. Little is known for certain of him; he was husband to Geva de Burci, and by her was father to a son called Robert. In his lifetime, Martin's son would be known as Robert fitz Martin, and this patronymic would develop into the surname FitzMartin.
In the Domesday Book of 1086, Geva's new husband, William de Falaise, is listed as a landowner in Devon, Dorset and Somerset, as was her father, Serlo de Burci. The bulk of these estates, including Blagdon and Dartington, would later devolve on Robert.

[edit] End of the Line
The last of the senior line of the family, Eleanor, died in 1342. By this stage, junior branches of the family were already established in Waterston, Dorset (later of Athelhampton); St. David's, Wales; and by 1365 Thomas Martyn had settled in the town of Galway, Ireland.
