[edit] LGBT WikiProject Newsletter

The LGBT studies WikiProject Newsletter!
Issue III - February 1, 2007

Announcement: If someone requests help or feedback on an article, please try your hardest to help them out if you are able. Thank you.

Project News
  • The LGBT Portal has once again been revamped and a work rota started. Efforts towards Featured Portal status are slowly coming together.
  • The assessment system has been a great success, we have tagged over 4000 articles! Please tag any LGBT related articles you come across by adding {{LGBTProject | class=}} to the talkpage. Please see the Assessment Department for how to assess an article according to the grading system.
  • The Translation department has changed its focus, to LGBT articles about non-English topics and people on which there may be more information on the relevant foreign Wikipedia. Please add your name if you are fluent in any language other than English.
  • Jumpaclass is picking up slowly, with nine people having entered. With over 2000 stubs we need to improve our article quality. Please sign up and get it going! Challenge another user to see how far you can jump a stub!
  • There is an ongoing discussion about the current LGBT categorisation system here, here, and a little bit here. A special page has now been set up here to deal with this.
  • A Watchlist has been set up to monitor controversial and/or highly vandalised articles. It can also be used for article disputes, just add a note explaining the nature of the dispute.
  • With the influx of so many active members, there is now enough support for a LGBT studies peer review, which may be found here. It's in the beta phase at the moment, so bear with us if we make any mistakes. Feel free to peer review any articles you have been working on.
  • It was agreed this month to start reducing the uses of the Notice board, as many members felt that it was not effective. An open tasks template has been created, bringing together important announcements, FAC/FARs, Peer reviews, XfDs, the COTM, and requested articles. You may desire to watchlist it. A Deletion sorting subpage is also now working to bring together XfDs - this should be bot-driven, but we have not currently tagged enough articles to make this fully automated, so please update the list with any LGBT-related XfDs you come across.

[edit] LGBT Headlines

I am removing such headlines from articles not relating to LGBT. I am going through many "LGBT" articles, and removing the erroneously placed templates. LGBT issues has a place on wikipedia, but to assume every gay person who we know is relevant to LGBT issues is overhaul. People are known for being themselves, not for identifying as LGBT. Eedo Bee 11:51, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm having trouble following your logic. Are you saying that, because people have more important characteristics than their sexual orientation, all gay people should be removed from WikiProject LGBT studies? I'm imploring you, since your bias against all LGBT issues is clearly stated on your userpage, to act with caution and seek consensus before making big changes on LGBT-related articles. What you're doing in your 'overhaul' of the WikiProject is disruptive. -FisherQueen (Talk) 11:57, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
I can see you are having trouble. My logic is that LGBT banner is used to liberally. Got it yet? My point is that unless someone is known for being gay, such as Quentin Crisp or the like, or is a staunch advocate for AIDS protection or similar, a LGBT banner is not necessary. A Banner that reads "LGBT issues" should only be there when there is an issue Eedo Bee 12:01, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
Maybe you misunderstand the purpose of that tag. It isn't a banner identifying the person as an important advocate, it's just a tag adding the article to WikiProject LGBT studies. The WikiProject works to maintain, update, and improve all articles that are of interest in the area of LGBT studies, both major and minor. The tag on talk pages adds those pages to the project's collection of pages to make better- when you remove the tag, the article disappears from the project's list. It isn't making a political statement, it's just helping us list those articles so we can work on them more conveniently. Notice that Fred Phelps is also cataloged for the project- not because he is in any way an advocate for LGBT rights, but because he is a person who is interesting to someone who is interested in the study of LGBT people and their lives.
Removing the tag is disruptive to the project, because it keeps us from easily locating the articles that we're interested in improving. -FisherQueen (Talk) 12:08, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
Surely every article, excepting good articles, should be edited. I like how you say "We're interested in improving". "We're". Does this I can refer to "you people".? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eedo Bee (talkcontribs)
I say 'we' because I'm a member of the WikiProject under discussion. That's how I found the Billy Tipton article and started working to make it better. Could you please start signing your messages on talk pages? -FisherQueen (Talk) 12:30, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
Sorry, I am forgetful. You would agre that the majority of people working for the LGBT project are LGBT yeah? So then surely that would put an enormous amount of bias on the edits made by such people. Eedo Bee 12:52, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
You would be wrong - Skysmith 13:11, 1 February 2007 (UTC)
Honestly, I have no idea about the orientation of other people on the project. The important thing isn't whether one has biases- we all do- but whether one is able to edit in a way that works toward neutrality. For example, I recently worked with an anti-gay editor on the introduction to Exodus International, and the result was one we both agreed was fair. That's consensus, and it's how Wikipedia works. We can disagree, talk about it, and come up with something together that's better than what any of us could do alone. But we do that by working within the same policies and goals, and by relying on verifiable sources. It's really kind of beautiful and inspiring, how well it works. -FisherQueen (Talk) 12:58, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Billy Tipton

I noticed that you have done lots of goood work for Billy Tipton article. - Skysmith 13:15, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for noticing! It's the first article that I've worked this hard on, and although it isn't where I want it yet, I'm really proud of how well it's going. -FisherQueen (Talk) 13:16, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Donnie Davies

Thanks for all your input on the Donnie Davies page. I decided to put it up for a deletion reversal at WP:DRV as you've suggested. It seems to be going well. If you'd like to weigh in on the decision, please drop in! --SquatGoblin 22:39, 1 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] You get a...

For the response to User:Eedo Bee - that was well said, non-confrontational, and simply awesome! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 04:32, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

Aw, shucks, thanks. I still think that, if User:Eedo Bee could learn to stay away from the articles that trigger his rage, and learn a little more about Wikipedia policy, he could be a productive member of WikiSociety. -FisherQueen (Talk) 10:28, 2 February 2007 (UTC)
How did Noah get all those dinosaurs onto the ark????????? Jeffpw 21:47, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, obviously, it is ridiculous to think of Noah loading enormous dinosaurs onto the ark, especially two of each kind, which is an awful lot of enormous animals. But baby dinosaurs were really quite small, so, using logic, it's quite clear that Noah took baby dinosaurs- two of each kind- onto the ark. In fact, we don't really know that they're completely extinct- consider examples like the Loch Ness Monster, which could well be one of the few surviving dinosaurs. I promise you, this is what I learned in Sunday School was the only logical solution to the question. -FisherQueen (Talk) 21:50, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Wow, FisherQueen, that's quite instructive. But allow me to say I hope they didn't teach you sex-education, as well. Jeffpw 22:03, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
No fear of that... I learned absolutely nothing whatsover about sex in elementary school, in high school, or at my Christian college. Nor did I learn anything in church, nor from my parents. Nothing. Thank GOD for the public library system, is all I have to say on that subject. -FisherQueen (Talk) 22:05, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Here are some links to get you started. Happy reading! Jeffpw 22:10, 3 February 2007 (UTC)

Thanks very much. I'm pretty sure I won't be needing this one, this one, or this one. You did forget a pretty important one, in my opinion. -FisherQueen (Talk) 22:11, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Funny, that one just slipped my mind! I'm reading it now, as it is rather a mystery to me. Perfect Kinsey 6 here. :-) Jeffpw 22:17, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Wow! It even has pics! God bless Wikipedia, and its noble effort to bring enlightment to the unwashed masses. Jeffpw 22:19, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I completely respect their use of the illustrative photograph... some might consider it obscene, but every teenaged straight boy ought to be clearly shown EXACTLY where it is. -FisherQueen (Talk) 22:23, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Sort of how I feel about the Penis article, though not for straight girls! Jeffpw 22:28, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Well, the penis is a bit easier to locate without a map. -FisherQueen (Talk) 22:32, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Speaking solely as a nurse, I can tell you that sometimes a map is needed! Jeffpw 22:35, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Oh. My. God. -FisherQueen (Talk) 22:36, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I don't read your talk page for one day, and THIS is what I come back to see? Can't leave you kids alone for one minute. --Another Kinsey 6. Philippe Beaudette 22:38, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm sorry we traumatized you, Philippe Beaudette. Anyway, I just stopped in for a moment to check my watchlist, but I have a hot date with a beverage, a meal, and a new book. -FisherQueen (Talk) 22:41, 3 February 2007 (UTC)
Not only were the comments here some of the funniest things I've read today, they led me to an article I found quite interesting! Thanks, y'all :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 00:03, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Dream Change

Hello!

I tryied to create a page about the Dream Change Coalition but I think something wasn't right. After the speedy deletion note, I freaked out and I blanked the page, hoping to remove to wrong content. But still, a note is there about the deletion of the blanked page. I'm not quite sure what wasn't right about the page I created. I saw the Guidelines and criteria page about how to create a good page, but since English isn't my first language, I'm not exactly sure to understand the criteria. Can you give me a hint please? Thanks! —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Sjacques (talkcontribs) 23:08, 3 February 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Are you Aysiu?...

Just wanted to know if you were the awesome person who owns psychocats.net. You guys have alot in common o.o —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jorophose (talkcontribs) 23:10, 4 February 2007 (UTC).

No, I'm not Aysiu. Never even been to psychocats.net. But if she is smart, beautiful, and brilliantly intelligent, then we certainly do have a lot in common. -FisherQueen (Talk) 23:11, 4 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] FisherQueen.......

Hello again FisherQueen. I know we have had a rough past, but I would like to formally apologize for some of the things said. I know you are a strong resiliant wikipedian and I hope you will accept. Also, unlucky on your request to become an administrator, im sure in a few months when you have a few more edits under your belt you will succeed. ~ JFBurton 20:56, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jigdafrod's 2moons page

Hello Fisherqueen, I am new to Wiki and I recently tried to add a page about the new MMO "2moons" and it was put up for speedy deletion, I'm sorry but I am new to creating pages and I did not realise that it looked like I was advertising it. Could you please persuade a user with a greater knowledge of the subject to set up some kinfd of page for it. As the game is greatly anticipated. Much thanks...Jigdafrod 16:23, 7 February 2007 (UTC) (Talk)

I don't really remember that page, but if it was put up for speedy deletion, it was probably because it didn't seem to meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines. If you think it was deleted in error, all you need to do is read those guidelines, put together evidence that the subject is notable, and request undeletion at Deletion Review. If the subject meets the notability requirement after all, and you have the sources to show it, then the community will decide to undelete the page. -FisherQueen (Talk) 16:31, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Tommy G Page

Hello Fisherqueen, I am new to this site. I am a radio talk show host. My name is sited under the Radio Bio's section, but not individually. I am a little confused how I am supposed to contest my page deletion. Any help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thank you very much. Tommygnj1015 —Preceding unsigned comment added by Tommygnj1015 (talkcontribs)

If you wrote an article about yourself, you should just let it get deleted - autobiographical articles are a conflict of interest and strongly discouraged under Wikipedia policies. Other than that, the problem with the article is whether you meet the notability standard- there's no article about me on Wikipedia, because I don't meet that standard, either. -FisherQueen (Talk) 19:39, 7 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] AFD Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Augusta High School (Kentucky)

I did a bit of research into the claimed copyright violation, and it appears that the "book" does not actually exist - see my comment at the AFD. I have a grave suspicion that there's a COI going on here, given the edit history of some of the people involved, and the way the argument progressed ("school doesn't want it" = irrelevant, so go to "respect author's rights" = irrelevant, so go to copy right (misspelled) claims, which aren't proven). Just a head's up that the claim to the existence of that book really needs to be proven! SkierRMH 00:01, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

This AfD is getting really, really odd. -FisherQueen (Talk) 00:39, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your Userpage Vandal

I reported that pesky userpage vandal of yours for you ;).¤~Persian Poet Gal (talk) 23:34, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

I know, I got an edit conflict when I was trying to report him. I would never artificially raise my vandal score by failing to ask for blocks when appropriate... though I was tempted. I want to get to 100, you know. -FisherQueen (Talk) 23:35, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
Gwernol gets that many in a week without even trying. ;) CiaranG 23:41, 8 February 2007 (UTC)
Sure, but Gwernol is special. I'm not jealous... I just annoy as many vandals as I can with the resources I have. -FisherQueen (Talk) 23:42, 8 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] User:64.201.200.221

This individual came into the Bermuda Triangle page today, altered it, was warned about it, and then came back a short time later to do it again. I've seen this from a few such persons who've been repeatedly warned about vandalizing an article, only to have them return and do it over and over again. I've also seen pages on these vandals in which they are given the "last warning" tag seven, eight, or more times.

My suggestion for vandals who won't stop is pretty simple. They vandalize after they've been warned, block them for a day. They return and do it again, block them for a week. It escalates every time they vandalize...block them for a week, then for a month, then for two months, then six, then a year. Think it could be something talked about with the Wiki-staff? Carajou 01:43, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Well, I don't block anyone, not being an admin. Isn't a pattern of escalating blocks more or less already practiced? -FisherQueen (Talk) 12:58, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Jumpaclass

Have you worked on your jumpaclass article since you nominated it yesterday? If you're going head to head with us you shouldn't have an advantage. :) Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 18:08, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

No, I just didn't understand what the 'head to head' meant and mistook it for a misplaced title bar. Once I noticed your conversation on your talk page, I realized that it was a one-on-one challenge, and reverted myself. I'm not very bright, alas. -FisherQueen (Talk) 18:10, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WP:LGBT Coordinator Election Notice

This is just a quick, automated note to let you know that there is an election being conducted over the next 7 days for the position of "Coordinator" for the LGBT WikiProject. Your participation is requested. -- SatyrTN (talk · contribs)

[edit] How do you?

Manage to get your user page vandalized? Not that I want to invite that on my own. But I'm curious! -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 01:51, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

It's easy! Just spend an hour checking recent changes. Revert vandalism, tag vanity articles for speedy deletion, and leave warning templates on the vandals/vain people's talk pages. If you're lucky, you too many be vandalized, once or many times. Did you see the most recent one? He added the word "GAY!!" to the top of my userpage. Kind of redundant, since my userpage kind of already says that. -FisherQueen (Talk) 11:21, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
I've done a bit of vandalism patrol - guess I'll just have to try a little harder!!! :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 16:30, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
It just takes determination. I don't get vandalized every single time I patrol, but it seems to be inevitable if you do it enough. And I like RC patrol... I find it relaxing. -FisherQueen (Talk) 18:45, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Maybe if you try and attract a more intelligent class of vandal, they'll actually read your user page and try and insult you by replacing it with "I AM NOT GAY!!". By the way, dealing with spam is good for a laugh as well. CiaranG 19:24, 12 February 2007 (UTC)
Were do you live? :) Even if you told him, following the directions might be difficult for him... -FisherQueen (Talk) 19:26, 12 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] You're getting closer!

So I did NPP today and bam! 4 vandalism edits to my userpage. Still, you are distressingly close to my total. -- Merope 00:17, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Maaan... I was really closing in on you, too. At this point, I feel like I'm racing you to 100. And apparently, you're a gay slut... how you doin'?-FisherQueen (Talk) 00:21, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
NPP is depressing! Half the "articles" added are spam, the other half bios of HS students or bands! Blech. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 03:09, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
I'm sorry, I was across the room and heard someone say "gay slut", so I had to come check it out. Can I buy someone a drink? Philippe Beaudette 03:26, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, it is kind of depressing... but there's a satisfaction in cleaning it all up, and the occasional thrill of userpage vandalism... make mine a cosmopolitan. -FisherQueen (Talk) 06:33, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Here's what I don't get - I do NPP - quite a bit actually (enough so that the lovable spouse is mumbling under his breath and playing a lot of solitare) - and yet, only two vandalisms of my userpage! I'm just sayin', I clearly am not being aggressive enough with the warnings! Philippe Beaudette 08:05, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
I've really only been vandalized by creators of attack pages, despite the hundreds of articles I've tagged during NPP. On NPP, attack page creators are really the only ones that are definitely prone to vandalism, although it's possible the random patent nonsense creator could too. Leebo86 12:31, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Maybe it's the timing? I do most of my RCP during hours when American kids are in school- they're vandalizing Wikipedia from school computers, with their friends, who will laugh and be impressed when they vandalize a userpage. I'm not saying that Pakistani kids can't also be obnoxious, but there are huge numbers of US and Canadian kids with easy access to computers at school... just a theory. -FisherQueen (Talk) 15:33, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
<sigh> Maybe I'm just not gay enough. -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 15:36, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Aw, sweetie, you're plenty gay enough for me... -FisherQueen (Talk) 15:41, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Snow day?

Did you get the day off today? I think my entire town is shut down, except for the university. Guess where I work! -- Merope 16:34, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

Snow day! Yep, it's raining ice here, so I'm taking a break from a hard morning of watching Buffy the Vampire Slayer DVDs to do a little recent change patrol. -FisherQueen (Talk) 16:35, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, we have a couple of inches of ice. It's warmed up a bit, though: never thought I'd consider 30 degrees to be downright balmy. Also, I ♥ Buffy. I wish the university would cancel, but they haven't done that in over a decade. Poo. -- Merope 18:10, 13 February 2007 (UTC)
I feel guilty about the weather... An ice storm is a terrible thing; it causes car accidents, widespread power outages, and other things that hurt or kill people every time one happens. But they're so pretty, the way the ice covers the trees and makes them all sparkly, that I can't help enjoying them from the safety of my home. -FisherQueen (Talk) 22:57, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] So I noticed...

I thought the article was just created by a newb (newcomer) that didn't know what he/she was talking about; so I didn't think it was actually valid. Thanks for the heads up! Power level (Dragon Ball) 21:46, 13 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] West Cheshire College

I have removed material from West Cheshire College that does not comply with our [[WP:V|verifiability policy]. Critical material must always be referenced from reliable sources, especially negative material. Negative material that does not comply with that must be immediately removed. Note that the removal does not imply that the information is either true or false.

Please do not reinsert this material unless you can provide reliable citations, and can ensure it is written in a neutral tone.Docg 15:15, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

Okay, but this is in reference to a change someone else made, which I reverted, on December 8. I didn't actually add any material, cited or otherwise, to the article, two months ago. -FisherQueen (Talk) 04:15, 18 February 2007 (UTC)
OK, np.--Docg 00:22, 19 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Vandels

I am suggesting that El_negro_IV be blocked. Last revert was to Causes_of_the_French_Revolution. Thanks. Woodsstock 11:09, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

I think you're looking for Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. -FisherQueen (Talk) 12:34, 21 February 2007 (UTC)

hey its quackers and..why cant u let me just keep one thing?? u are runing my thunder here D:< —Preceding unsigned comment added by Quackers074 (talkcontribs)

Fellows, if you want there to be an article about your high school, all you need to do is read up on Wikipedia policies, do the research, and write a good, informative, well-sourced article about the high school. It requires work, the ability to distinguish between what's relevant and what isn't, and capital letters. But a short article with no actual information in it is bound to be deleted.-FisherQueen (Talk) 12:22, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Regarding the headline of the final warning

You should really relax on charge of "vandalism". I was trying something out when i attempted making an article (I only tested it as an auto-biography) Vandalism? That's a bit harsh. I suppose you know best. Drunktrumpet 20:18, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

What vandalism is not Although at times incorrectly referred to as such, the following things are not considered "vandalism" and are therefore treated differently:

Tests by experimenting users New users who discover the "edit this page" button sometimes want to experience editing a page and may add something unhelpful to a page (e.g., a few random characters) as a test. Such edits are not done in bad faith and are therefore not vandalism! Rather than be warned for vandalism, these users should be warmly greeted, and given a reference to the sandbox (e.g., using the test template message) where they can continue to make test edits without being unintentionally disruptive. If a user has made a test edit and then reverted it, consider placing the message Welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for experimenting, and for reverting your edits. Please take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to our encyclopedia. In future, please do not experiment on article pages; instead, use the sandbox. on their talk page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Drunktrumpet (talkcontribs)

Yes, I agree with you that the {uw-creation4} template shouldn't have the 'Vandalism' label in the header, since it's confusing. It's only the Final Warning template that has it... I suppose the reasoning is that anyone who is on their final warning and still making inappropriate edits is doing so intentionally and can fairly be labelled a 'vandal.' Maybe I'll go to the template discussion page and suggest a change in the header. -FisherQueen (Talk) 22:47, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit] I love you

Hey thanks for letting us keep the hermitage page. I greatly appreciated. Your the coolest mod here. --Dr William Wright 18:19, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

I'm not a mod. I don't have any power over whether the page is kept or not. And it hasn't been kept... the deletion discussion page is where we decide, as a community, whether to keep the page or not. Right now, it doesn't look good for the article, as you can see. If I offer you some advice on how to save it, it's because I'm a nice person, but that's about the extent of my power. -FisherQueen (Talk) 18:43, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
You're so modest for an all powerful god/dess :) -- SatyrTN (talk | contribs) 18:57, 23 February 2007 (UTC)

haha oh well you descieving, dang can you put a good word in for us though?

hey! hows the hermitage thing? i added somme things what do u think???

It's getting a lot better, but if it's going to survive deletion review, it still needs sources other than the school web page. -FisherQueen (Talk) 21:16, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
