The discussion on whether to merge fire lookout tower and fire lookout can be found on Talk:Fire lookout

Fire Lookout Towers are making a comeback, after a narrow escape with extinction during the 1980’s and 1990’s. Although the demise of historic Fire Lookout Towers continues as a result of neglect, abandonment, and declining budgets, many of the towers are finding new life as enlightened Fire Service personnel are coming to realize that fading budgets for that technology simply cannot compete with a good set of human eyes watching the forest for wildfire.

What does this sentence mean? fading budgets for that technology? What technology? Seems unclear. --Battlehamster 13:14, 5 September 2006 (UTC)

I rewrote the section on Japanese lookout towers to correct some grammar issues. It seems to me that that section should have some more concrete information and citations where appropriate, maybe a Japanese speaker to comb the refferences for some more concrete info?DreamsOfSheep 20:29, 15 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Merge proposal

Merge proposal with fire lookout has been up for a few months with nobody supporting, so I am going to close the discussion and remove the merge tags. Dragomiloff 01:16, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] re trivia = TV?

What was the old '60s-era TV series that centred around some guy whose job was on a fire lookout. Same atmosphere to the show as Lassie, just out in the bush, rescue adventure, family fare wholesome, but the main character was Forest Service. I always wanted that job when I was a kid, holed up on a mountaintop looking out over miles and miles....probably wouldn't have stood the boredom; anyway there were a series of these in a certain area I do a lot of articles on; I was half-expecting to find a [[List of fire lookout towers in <name the state/province>]] or Category:Fire lookout towers....towards the end of the "heritage" flavoured Category:Locations of former fire lookout towers or Category:Decommissioned fire lookout towers?. Too much work, too little of a point....in various areas, though, old lookouts have become either hiking of 4x/view draws, partly because of their road access and also - of course - because of their locations, which were selected for their prime panoramic views. Not an important round of articles, but places worth documenting sometime, someday, by someone....Skookum1 (talk) 07:17, 21 February 2008 (UTC)

Well, howdy-doody, there is such a category; OK, you'll be seeing a few new additions in the next while; some mountain articles already exist, I think, others have reasons to; this came up in side-tangent from another discussion, so I checked by here; glad to have found this out. Should have some nice pics for some of these, and some of it's interesting research....Skookum1 (talk) 07:20, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
