Hello! My wife Stephanie and I run FiranMUX. I came across this article and thought I could contribute to it. In updating the article, I added some historical information and corrected it on the facts. I am happy to discuss Firan or this article. Email me!Adam Dray 05:39, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

Oops! I could have sworn that I was logged in when I made these changes. Sorry about that. — Adam Dray 18:00, 3 August 2005 (UTC)

These changes are mine (oops), and I removed the NPOV tag as I believe the article is now up to Wikipedia's standards. In the interests of full disclosure, I should probably state that I have played a couple chars on Firan over the years, but more importantly I've been in the MU* community for about ten years and I think I have a pretty decent idea of how Firan is perceived by others. I'm not sure the praise/criticism sections belong in a site like Wikipedia, though. Thoughts? Tim 15:38, August 23, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the edit. I didn't want to turn this into a Firan vs. Angry Player dispute on wikipedia and having a third party look it over helps avoid that. I suspect that any discussion of Firan is going to come with value judgments one way or another, so I am personally comfortable with praise/criticism sections, as long as both sides are given their due. I changed the value-laden word "fornication" in the opening section to "procreation," which best captures the spirit of the code under discussion. — Adam 04:43, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Alrightie...made a few changes to this article...

  • removed a link from within the body (wikipedia policy). I think there are still two others that should go.
  • tried to put Firan into the context of its contributions to gaming. I still don't feel this is adequately done.
  • tried to differentiate between Firan the game, and Firan the world, which I think could still use more work. A couple of places it skips back and forth. Firan the world in and of itself could probably have its own article, but for now, it should ideally be differentiated here.
  • tried to add a bit more perspective to the criticism section, which seemed kinda biased to me. I tried to put it also, in the wider context of similar issues in the MMORPG world. The language could definitely use a tidy, though. It would be nice here to draw a comparison to Second Life here, which maintains that users own the content they create, and license it to Linden Labs (different approach to the same problem). The legal implications of this are also interesting.

One note to Adam. Cool that you take an interest in the article, btw. Wikipedia thrives because of people like you dropping by, so very cool. On the "Firan vs. Angry Player" issue, I think it is possible (and desirable) to show both sides here. Not everyone has to agree with

Thanks for the edits! They're great! I found some citations for some of the claims of "newbie-friendliness" and backed off the language where I couldn't support them. I'm not sure if it's kosher to link to discussion threads but how else does one cite proof that players think your staff are friendly?

Is the comment about the economy being unique...perhaps only matched by Second Life etc. etc. a bit presumptuous? Sure it does have good depth, but sweeping statement like this don't really fit with Wikipedia. I could name, for example, an MUD where whole huge wars could rely on which character is Duke right now, or wether so-and-so bought out all the vegetables. I think this statement is just too... bold. Thoughts? --Ω 16:28, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Yeah, that statement is a bit of hyperbole. I didn't write it but I'll try to make it say something more reasonable and verifiable later. Firan does have a pretty complex economic system compared to other games of its type (meaning other text-based MUSHes and MUDs), but I doubt it can compare to professional ventures like Second Life or World of Warcraft. The Duke-and-vegetables thing could totally happen on Firan, though substitute Clan Leader for Duke and substitute cheese pies for vegetables. Thanks for the catch. -- Adam 15:58, 26 August 2006 (UTC)
