[edit] History

The histories of Champaign, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and First Presbyterian Church Champaign, IL are interlinked. While it is possible to tell the story of one without the others, it is an incomplete tale.

First Church Champaign came into existence 17 years prior to the charter of the University of Illinois. At that time Champaign was little more than a swamp know as West Urbana.

In 1867, one hundred thirty-seven visionary Presbyterians erected the current sanctuary. The distinctive second floor "Upper Room" is a testament to their vision. In the same year the State of Illinois chartered the Illinois Industrial University (which later came to be known as the University of Illinois).

Denomination: Presbyterian
