First Horizon National Corporation NYSEFHN is a large banking company based in Memphis, Tennessee. It is the parent company of First Horizon Bank, First Tennessee Bank, and FTN Financial.

  • First Horizon, a traditional banking subsidiary of FHNC for areas outside of Tennessee, is based in Irving, Texas. It offers a range of financial services, including mortgages through First Horizon Home Loans and banking services from First Horizon Bank, a division of First Tennessee National Association.
  • FTN Financial, headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, is one of the nation's top underwriters of U.S. government agency securities.
  • First Tennessee Bank, headquartered in Memphis, Tennessee, has the largest market share in Tennessee and has earned one of the highest customer retention rates of any bank in the nation

It is now the largest Tennessee-based bank (by far with recent merger of Union Planters Bank into Birmingham, Alabama-based Regions Financial Corporation), and the only Tennessee-based banking company with any genuine influence beyond the borders of the state.

First Horizon National Corporation, the parent company of First Tennessee Bank, also includes the subsidiary First Tennessee Bank National Association, as well as the First Horizon family of companies, which includes First Horizon Home Loans and First Horizon Bank. First Horizon Home Loan Corporation is one of the top 20 U.S. mortgage (originations and servicing) providers and First Horizon Bank, established in December 2003, offers traditional banking products and services outside the state of Tennessee, in the Atlanta, Dallas-Ft Worth metroplex, Northern Virginia and Balitmore markets.

Its logo, shared among all of FHNC's three subsidiaries, is a cutout portion of the Tennessee state flag.

[edit] Corporate history

First Horizon began as the former First National Bank of Memphis, which by the late 1970s was operating throughout most of the state of Tennessee as First Tennessee National Bank.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the bank sought to expand beyond the borders of Tennessee, and changed the name of its parent company accordingly from First Tennessee National Corporation to First Horizon National Corporation in April 2004. The First Horizon brand originally began as a financial loan and insurance company, and in 2003 became a traditional bank, carrying the First Horizon nameplate, when the company opened branches outside Tennessee . The company continues to operate as First Tennessee Bank within the borders of the Volunteer State.

First Horizon Bank has announced plans, as of 2007, to exit all markets outside its core Tennesseee markets, where it has the dominant market share.
