[edit] First National Bank of Chicago / First Chicago

Main article: Bank One Corporation

Prior to the 1980s, branch banking in Illinois was prohibited. This inhibited the growth of large banks. During this time period, the two largest banks in Illinois were First Chicago and Continental Illinois.

First Chicago was used as a brand name starting in 1969 when the bank moved into a new skyscraper in the Loop in Chicago. In 1995, First Chicago merged with NBD of Detroit to create the First Chicago NBD Corp., which was then the seventh-largest bank in the United States. Three years later in 1998, First Chicago NBD was acquired by Banc One Corporation. [2]

[edit] First Chicago Bank created when Labe Bank and Bloomingdale Bank and Trust merged

In early 2006 Labe Bank was purchased by Castle Creek then in December 2006 Castle Creek acquired Bloomingdale Bank and Trust. The two companies became one on December 11, 2006, and the First Chicago name was created for the company. The company stated that the Labe Bank has a long history of serving Chicago and therefore, took the First Chicago name. [3]
