First Camp was founded in 2002 when five experienced entrepreneurs within the Swedish tourism industry decided to start the first private chain of campgrounds in Sweden. Swedish tourism have been growing for a number of years and camping have been a major contributor to this phenomenon. However, the camping section of the tourism industry have been quite stable and not very entrepreneurial. When First Camp bought their first site, Umeå Camping (lated renamed First Camp Umeå) they became part of the changes that now transforms the industry as a whole. The German stock-listed company Regenbogen AG bough Åhus Camping in Skåne, and the first listed Swedish camping company, Nordic Camping, bought a number of smaller sites. First Camp won the bidding war for Arcus Camping in Luleå (now First Camp Luleå) and also Skutberget in Karlstad (now First Camp Karlstad). The company have appointed a former vice president of a stock-enlisted company to be the new CEO of the group and set as its goal to be on the Swedish stock exchange no later than 2011.
