[edit] Welcome
Hello, welcome to Wikipedia.
You might find these links helpful in editing pages or creating new ones: How to edit a page, How to write a great article, Naming conventions, Manual of Style. You should read our policies at some point too.
But don't feel you have to read every policy document before you do anything. Dive in, be bold in editing, and if you do anything wrong, someone will be quick to correct it and let you know (hopefully, politely!)
Here are some tasks you can do:
- Wikify: Don Angell, Sergio Berlioz, Gene Clark, Maravilla, Alhamiri, Backlog...
- Cleanup: Tourism in the United States, List of music prodigies, Harry T. Burn, 1990 in association football, Software quality, Purwokerto, Backlog...
- Stubs: 1928 in radio, Capitalist Roader, Cable box (outside), CEVNI, Ajeeb, Academic institution, 112, More...
- Verify: Language demographics of Quebec, Pirates in popular culture, Angel, Backlog...
- Update: British Columbia Highway 99A, Australian Senate, Ansari X Prize, BBC One, Bright House Networks, More...
- Neutrality: E. Lee Spence, History of Latinos and Hispanics in the United States, Cod, Jack Dann, Liang-Jie Zhang, Backlog...
- Copyedit: Oru Vadakkan Veeragatha, OC Transpo Route 95, Naidu, Sorcerer Hunters, Gienger, More...
- Merge: Mendez Middle School, Elgin tablets, Institute of Scientific Instrumentation, Backlog...
- Style: Evolution of belief, CD-R, Gladiators (British TV show), Mercer County Park, Henry V (play), More...
- Expand: Bone Against Steel, Jed Buchwald, 1593 in music, Dan Balz, 1962 NFL Draft, The Artist at Work, 1975 Minnesota Twins season, 4G, Michael Curry, More...
- Requests: Interim efficient, Internal knowledge spillover, Linear pricing schedule, Market power theory of advertising, Metaproduction function, More...
- Articles to be split: A Separate Peace, AMV (TV station), Abu Suhail an-Nafi, Adam's Bridge, Afro-Mexican, More...
- Mediation Cabal: help mediate an open case!
-
Cleanup backlogs - Review recent overhauls - Active fixup projects - Maintenance projects - Maintenance COTW: be merged
If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my talk page. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian!
- If you made any edits before you got an account, you might be interested in assigning those to your username.
- You can sign your name using three tildes, like this: ~~~. If you use four, you can add a datestamp too, as I've done below. This is most useful on talk pages rather than main articles.
Again, welcome! --ALargeElk 10:19, 19 May 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Mishneh Torah
Hi Fintor. Glad you saw my extensions of the Mishneh Torah article! I would recommend not including links in the article (like you did there), but to add them to "External links". The only exception is links that function as references (ie without a body text). JFW | T@lk 19:21, 24 May 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Talmud and Orthodox Judaism
Hi Fintor. My compliments on your judicious edits of the above. There are some problems with these and some related articles, and I was wondering what your thoughts were on the matter:
- Some are very badly structured
- Some contain POV fossils that nobody has bothered to remove
- Some are reflections of religious fervor rather than an attempt at gathering encyclopedic knowledge
- The external links are often used to introduce POVed material instead of using the body text
- They are being edited continually by a large number of people who employ varying terminology, effectively leading to chaos
Would you see any blessing in starting up a Wikipedia:WikiProject that sets guidelines on Judaism-related articles? JFW | T@lk 10:03, 1 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks for your response, Fintor. I now little about finance, but I do my bit on Judaism and medical topics on wikipedia...
- If we are to start of a Wikiproject, I'm not sure if we should use any catalogisation or classification system at all. The Category:Judaism should perhaps be split up a bit, with everything flowing from there (e.g. into Category:Jewish books, Category:Rabbis). Cooperation between the "branches", even though they might exclude each other's validity, will be necessary.
- There should be little editorial policy on a Jewish wikiproject. Simply wikipedia rules are in force. Validation against any source is probably not necessary; the wiki-consensus will do its work.
- However:
- (1) Modern Hebrew transliteration rules (without Unicode characters, like Noah with a dot under the "h")
- (2) Basic and brief translations of important concepts, and perhaps a "Jewish glossary" somewhere for more elaborate things. I've seen too many: "The Torah is the five books of moses, the first five books of the Jewish Bible/Old Testament..." in articles that only tangentially touch on this.
- (3) As little external links as possible - only to truly representative organisations, and not propaganda machines.
- PS, for a POV fossil, please see what I deleted from the Tenth Commandment in Ten Commandments: according to the order of the words it flows that in the Midbar houses were more valuable than women, while in Arvoth Moav it was the other way round ???!! Baloney de'Orayso.

[edit] Categories
Many Jewish articles have grown a list of categories. While I applaud this categorisation, I feel there is a lot of overlinking (all articles were suddenly in Category:Rabbis, while this was unnecessary). I have deleted a large number of instances and discussed this with User:IZAK, who did most of the categorisation. You might care to review the categorisations whenever you edit a Jewish page... Hi Fintor. I'd like to make you aware that http://www.come-and-hear.com, however innocent-looking, is a project of the rather anti-semitic (or, shall we say, keeping a close track on Jews) http://www.public-action.com . [edit] Article Licensing
Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 2000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:
- Multi-Licensing FAQ - Lots of questions answered
- Multi-Licensing Guide
- Free the Rambot Articles Project
To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:
- Option 1
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
OR
- Option 2
- I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
- DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual
Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)
[edit] Yechezkel Landau
Hey Fintor, making a page with just links is really not done! :-) I wrote the article for you. Also, please do not use horizontal rules on pages - the manual of style discourages them. JFW | T@lk 11:22, 14 Dec 2004 (UTC)
[edit] Neo Orthodoxy
I think Neo-Orthodoxy is simply a misnomer of Torah im Derech Eretz. It presumes that there is neo at all, which I personally disagree with. Rav Hirsch - in his own view - never innovated anything, and there are plenty of sources (e.g. Shaarei Talmud Torah by Rav Yehuda Levi) that support this. Most rishonim and the majority of the acharonim support the acquisition of secular knowledge, and the Maharal you quoted even extends this outside the scope of professional education.
What would the difference be between Torah im Derech Eretz and Neo-Orthodoxy anyway? I think the latter should redirect to the former. JFW | T@lk 14:41, 27 Jan 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Crazy changes by Gilgamesh
Unfortunately, User:Gilgamesh is now imposing his own views by changing the transliterated Hebrew names of articles with redirects to unreadable Hebrew names and fonts, as if his criteria are the only ones to reckon with, when there are in fact several. My computer, as I am sure many others' as well, does not pick up his type of fonts, and thus he is messing up articles such as Safed, Hadera, Holon, Afula, Arad, Israel and many others defacing them and making them unreadable on the web. He is going to DESTROY the normal usage of Wikipedia's Hebrew transliterations to satisfy his own needs without there being any consensus. Common usages are being thrown out in favor of obscure and pedantic academic usages familiar to only a handful of unkown academics. He should be called upon to stop BEFORE he rushes to do further damage without any consensus being reached. All his changes should therefore be reverted. See all his recent contributions via: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Gilgamesh I thank you for your interest, and urge all readers here to act. IZAK 04:32, 13 November 2005 (UTC)
[edit] Hebrew naming conventions
At the present time there is a serious discussion taking place, aiming at some consensus that will result in "official" Wikipedia guidelines about how Hebrew should be used and written in Wikipedia articles. Because of your past or ongoing interest in these type of articles with Hebrew words in them, your attention is called to Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Hebrew) [2] TO MAKE YOUR VIEWS KNOWN AND TO ADD TO THE DISCUSSION BEFORE THE "DOORS ARE SHUT" PLEASE SEE THE RELATED DISCUSSION PAGE AT Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (Hebrew) [3] Thank you! [edit] User PinchasC is making outrageous personal attacks and reverting articles
I am being harassed by User PinchasC, who keeps making personal attacks on me, is accusing other Wikipeida contributors of attempting to "shock" and deceive readers of our articles, is making outrageous lies about my editing, and is unilaterally reverting a consensus version of an article to one which pushes his own religious belief system. For almost a year I have tried to work with him, along with JayJg and JFW, but PinchasC shows no sign of stopping his religious tirade.
PinchasC is now trying to ban me from Wikipedia by flat-out lying. He is making outrageous baldfaced lies, such as (a) I am writing under sockpuppets, and (b) that I am making more than three reversions in a single day. In point of fact (a) I use no sock puppets, and I proudly sign the discussion page of each article, and (b) two reverts is not more than three. PinchasC has become unhinged in his outrageous dishonesty. RK 20:17, 2 December 2005 (UTC)
PinchasC's latest violations of Wikipedia policy are thus:
- Doing multiple reverts of an article that had a stable consensus state, and then flat out denies that he had done so, even though the edit history clearly shows this.
- Making false accusations that I am editing Wikipedia under some kind of "sockpuppet", a bizarre and obviously false lie. In fact, despite using multiple computers, I take pains to sign in and use my username, RK.
- "Outing" Wikipedia members who edit under anonymous usernames by broadcasting their real names in the article Discussion pages. This is a gross breach of Wikipedia protocol.
- Lying about the status of an important researcher in the field of the disputed subject. (PinchasC keeps retitling Rabbi Professor David Beger and Mr. Berger, which is not only misleading, but also considered a gross and delibertae insult in the Jewish community.
- Inserting attacks questioning academic and Orthodox Jewish authorities whose view of Chabad theology differs from his own. When discussing the new forms of theology developing within Chabad, PinchasC refuses to allow various POVs to be shown in accord with our NPOV policy. Rather, his edit censors multiple academic and Orthodox voices, and replaces all of their POvs with the slur "While the term received little attention at the time, it was later used to shock those who have no exposure to these sources." Please see the article to see the full context. PinchasC is stating that academic and Orthodox Jews who disagree with messianic Chabad beliefs are deceiving their readers by shocking them, and not letting them know that such beliefs are (in PinchasC's view) standard theology. Of course, how could anyone know, since his edits cut out many quotes and sources....all with an array of POVs that PinchasC apparently does not want our readers to be exposed to. RK
For example, PinchasC write "I would like to make a note here about the use of sockpuppets by RK to circumvent his restrictions in editing Judaism related articles. He is 66.155.200.129. --PinchasC | £€åV€ m€ å m€§§åg€ 19:42, 2 December 2005 (UTC)"
Well, that's just bizarre. Please see the page in question, Chabad, which I sign with my username all the time. In fact, my name is all over that page, explaining my edits. There is simply no way that PinchasC can claim that I am trying to hide my User ID identity. He's just out of control. RK 20:03, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

When editing an article on Wikipedia there is a small field labeled "Edit summary" under the main edit-box. It looks like this:
The text written here will appear on the Recent changes page, in the page revision history, on the diff page, and in the watchlists of users who are watching that article. See m:Help:Edit summary for full information on this feature.
Filling in the edit summary field greatly helps your fellow contributors in understanding what you changed, so please always fill in the edit summary field, especially for big edits or when you are making subtle but important changes, like changing dates or numbers. Hi Fintor: Shavuah Tov! There is an article on Jewish feminism that mentions its connection with Orthodox Judaism, Jewish feminism#Orthodox Judaism and feminism, it seems to be from a Modern Orthodox perspective only, and needs to be broadened. IZAK 10:07, 26 November 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Ritual washing in Judaism
The Ritual washing in Judaism article has recently gone a major re-write, with much contentious material inserted. I've tried to clean up some of it, but I'd appreciate it if you could take a look. Jayjg (talk) 18:22, 3 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Italian translation request
The paragraph in Rule of 72#History has been translated. In the future, please use the standard translation request template, rather than just adding text to the translation page. —Ryan McDaniel 21:20, 27 July 2007 (UTC)
- No problem about the informality. Really, it's just for ease of tracking the request. If you've got any other translation requests (esp. history related), just let me know. —Ryan McDaniel 23:43, 29 July 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Torah im Derech Eretz
Hey Fintor, just a reminder that Torah im Derech Eretz has Citations missing on it. Given that you have written most of the content, perhaps you could turn the "sources" into footnotes. JFW | T@lk 10:33, 5 August 2007 (UTC)
