[edit] Katla
Ok, but Katla still writes lyrics, concretely all of 'Ur Jordens Djup' was written by him and as I know, he was the designer of the covering picture of the album... 80.99.168.240 14:30, 26 May 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Visor om Slutet: EP or album?
just curious, why is this listed under ep and not the regular album list? im not too familiar with terms but what i understood was that an ep had a single + some extra songs, and this seems like a full album, even if it is 'an acoustic experiment'
- EP pretty much means extended play oppossed to the term lp (long play). It kind of originated in the vinyl days when a single would usually be played at 45rpm and contain only one song on each side. EP's on the other hand where played on 33rpm and could hold up to two songs on one side. So basically an EP is a release that doesn't quite qualify as a full-lenght but isn't solely a single either. Nowadays the term mcd would be much more appropiate. That said VOS with a running time of 30 minutes seems to qualify as beeing a full-album (especially seeing that Nattfodd runs in at only 4minutes more), the band itself however calls it an EP and I think we should maintain that here on wikipedia.Egishnugal 02:08, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Katla
The text is a bit confusing when it tells us about Katla: We can see in the "former members" section that he was in the band till 2001, when Jaktens Tid was released, yet the text on the "history" section states that he "retired after the release of the album Visor om Slutet", that is 2003, and he is also credited for that in the booklet (you can check that here: [1] -scroll all the way to the end of the page). Maybe he was just a guest artist? I don't know where to check that information right now, it would be great if someone could clarify that paragraph...
- As the official site states he was actually a member untill 2002, which is correct as the whole Visor om Slutet ep was recorded back then. (Note recorded, it was released in the beginning of 2003). He then left due to health problems.Egishnugal 02:00, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Classification
The music of Finntroll can be considered Fold metal as well as Troll metal. What category in the end ? What would say the band members ? Ukuk 17:54, 24 Mar 2005 (UTC)
- Fold metal? Don't you mean folk metal? I kinda think it's folk metal, they kinda invented the 'Troll metal' type --Soyweiser 19:27, 23 May 2005 (UTC)
-
- Sure I meant folk metal (: Ukuk 03:41, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

-
- Troll metal is down there without a mention of folk metal? Being as troll metal is basically based on lyrical content, it's abit silly to state that without even the mention of folk metal, which is a fully recognized sub-genre, one that Finntroll happen to (mainly) belong to. Owentheyo 18:08, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
-
"They combine black metal and Finnish polka, called humppa." Surely it's death metal, instead of black? Valdoran 07:38, 1 August 2006 (UTC)
- I don't believe they exhibit any death metal characteristics. I would say its more melodic/power metal rather than black, but overall they are folk metal, a genre within itself. 11 August 2006
- They are neither death nor black metal. The only "extreme" metal element in their music are some shrieks/growls, which of course does not make a band black or death metal. They mix heavy/power metal with humppa/folk music, that's it. 66.36.147.40 00:22, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

- Wikipedia is neither a place for your original research nor for your personal opinions, thus your edits break WP:NPOV and WP:NOR, which are official policies of Wikipedia. Also, I find it funny that after some info is changed on metal-archives.com, you try to "fix things" here (see Google cache that lists Finntroll as folk / black metal). However, this is not how Wikipedia works. Metal Archives is a good source of information for Wikipedia article, but Wikipedia does not mirror content from Metal Archives. Prolog 09:39, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

-
- How, exactly, is this "original research" or "personal opinion"? A band's genre is defined by its sound, is it not? Where is the black metal content in Finntroll, pray tell? I could just as easily say that claiming Finntroll is black metal IS opinion or research. As for Metal-archives.com, it was changed there after it was brought to the staff's attention that the genre listing was wrong, that's all. I'm not trying to 'mirror content' of anything, I simply want accurate information.

-
-
- Sure a band's genre is defined by its sound, but usually us Wikipedians shouldn't be the ones defining it as that would be original research. Besides, no one is claiming that Finntroll is pure black metal, but most sources list them as folk/black, thus both genres have to be included in the article. Prolog 19:57, 25 September 2006 (UTC)

- I don't follow. Who should define the genres, and how? External sources vary and differ - so which one shall we take, hmm? As for "pure" black metal, the thing is that there is nothing in Finntroll's sound that's close to black metal - they aren't even "half" black, unlike say Celtic Frost, Deströyer 666, etc. 69.70.27.42 12:53, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

- Reliable third-party sources and not which one but which ones. To present a neutral and worldwide point of view the most commonly used genres should be included. In this case those are folk and black. AMG even lists death metal and "Scandinavian metal", but these can be declined as a clear minority and due to AMG continuously proving to be a bad source for metal-related articles, especially on genres. - I consider Metal Archives and Tartarean Desire notable and pretty reliable sources. Metal Storm instead is pretty infamous for coining a "genre" of their own; suomi metal and for continuously using the term "extreme something metal", like on Finntroll's page. Of the sources that list Finntroll as folk/black, most would probably agree that the band is more folk than black, or "blackish folk", but that doesn't mean we could list only one genre in the WP article. - I beg to differ as the term black/folk metal seems to get coined most often by doubtfull sources at most. The band itself only mentions the term (folky) black metal as an influence when they first formed finntroll, I quote: "enter traditional Finnish hoedown- music, “humppa”, mixed with folky black metal. Since those drunken first chords, the concept of Finntroll was born." However in recent interviews, especially the german one circling the net, the band seems reluctant to call their style black. This in combination with the sites already mentioned seems enough to accept that albeit Finntroll are influenced by 'folky black metal' they have since moved to a form of folky melodic/ power metal. Of course I'm always open to sources that state otherwise.Egishnugal 02:37, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] First language?
Does someone know if the members are Finnish or Finland-Swedish, i.e. if they speak Finnish or Swedish as their first language? -- IP user, 22:16, 20 August 2005
- They speak Swedish ~~Drifason, 08:53, 15 November 2005
-
- Citing from the FAQ on their forums:
- "Q: Why is Finntroll's lyrics in swedish, and not in *insert language here*?
- A: Finntroll's original lyric-writer Katla spoke swedish as his native tongue, and swedish just sounds so damn trollish, so the decision was made. "
- As far as I know, I'm quite sure that most of them are Finns, only Routa is another Swede. Just looking at the names should tell you. :) -- towo 13:21, 15 November 2005 (UTC)
- Also should be noted, Swedish is also a native language of certain parts of Finland, so their sung language should not necessarily parralel their normal language (ie. Katla may have been taught to speak Finnish, but his family traditionally may have taught him Swedish). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.79.126.198 (talk) 02:04, 22 April 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Midnights Wonder? O rly?
How come this page translates Midnattens Widunder as Midnights Wonder, when the album's page translates it as the Monster of Midnight? Also, the page with the translations lists it as the Beast of Midnight. SAlpsu 16:39, 17 April 2006 (UTC)
In Swedish: under = wonder, but vidunder = monster/beast
- their official site actually mentions “Midnattens Windunder” as “The Horrors of Midnight”.Egishnugal 02:13, 6 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] new pic?
just a suggestion, i think the picture should be changed. the current one just shows them at what looks like a signing. it would be better to have a pic of the band on stage or something IMO
- That's true, it would be good to have another pic, unfortunately it seems that the only other photo of them is the one shown below the infobox, and even on that one you can only see them from behind, which isn't very good. If you can find a non-copyrighted photo, please upload it! IronChris | (talk) 04:25, 19 November 2006 (UTC)
