[edit] Vessels

I think the vessel list should only include active ones. The Turunmaa class isn't owned by the Navy anymore. GN113 Warbird Consulting Oy owns Turunmaa and the Osa 2 FACs. I think old ships should be mentioned in the history section which is very incomplete at the moment. I think there should be atleast a mention of the mineclearance after the war and the 1998 merging of coastal artillery and the navy. --Laisak 21:22, 18 December 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for the note on my talk page, it gets boring indeed when other editors aren't contributing/commenting. A good suggestion, when someone get the time a History of the Finnish Navy should be made where these would fit. A lot of WWII info can be found floating about on the net and I think that the Swedish Wikipedia has alot of info on pre-Grand Duchy affairs of the navy. The only literarure I've got that relate to this topic is The World's Navies by Salamander Books, I'm quite sure it mentioned that the Turunmaa class was first with CODOG. There's a lot of sites where veterans tell their stories about the war. There's a whole bunch of navy veterans among them. For example, there was this one site where a veteran gave a lengthy (but interesting) description of the battle of Someri island (which is briefly mentioned in this article). There also were accounts of the sinking of Ilmarinen. Unfortunately I can't remember what site this was, but I'll try to search for it some time. --HJV 00:36, 20 March 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hila class

I can't find any information on the Hila-class transports. Could someone please confirm their existance? Axeman89 01:53, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

I can personally confirm atleast two of them, Hila in Kotka and Hästö in Upinniemi were in service in 2003. They are closely related to the Hauki class being slightly larger. For specs and pictures see Heikki Helen's Shippages. --Laisak 18:12, 13 February 2006 (UTC)
Thank you Axeman89 23:01, 13 February 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Prefix

Is the Finnish navy ship prefix really FNS? In Finnish, the official Finnish Navy webpages do not use any prefixes, only mentioning the ship type: miinalaiva Hämeenmaa, ohjusvene Hamina. I believe that the prefix is only used in international exercises, as most Western navies use prefixes and calling Finnish Navy flagship Mil Hamina would cause misunderstandings.

It is true that they aren't widely used internally in the Finnish Navy, but as you said that is very common in other navies too. FNS is indeed used on international exercises, but also every time the ship identifies itself on international waters. I only have personal experience on the matter and can't back it up with some official statement. --Laisak 20:43, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
Search results on the FDF website show at least some references to the usage of FNS (ncluding one erroneous reference to a French ship that should be FS) http://tietokannat.mil.fi/cgi-bin/htsearch?words=FNS&x=0&y=0 --Laisak (talk) 10:35, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Hovercraft Tuuli

I see Tuuli was removed from the vessel list as being sold. Does anyone have a reference to this? It is still on the official website and I can't find any announcement on the deal. --Laisak 20:46, 4 April 2006 (UTC)
