Finnish national road 1
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Finnish national road 1 (Valtatie 1 in Finnish; Riksväg 1 in Swedish) is the main route between the major cities of Helsinki and Turku in southern Finland. It runs from the VI District of Turku to Munkkiniemi in Helsinki, and is part of the European route E18. For most of its length, the road is a motorway.
The first portion of the motorway was constructed in the 1960s between central Helsinki and Kehä III, and extended to Lohjanharju in the 1970s. In the other end of the road, the motorway stretches from eastern Turku to Muurla. In 2005, a portion of motorway between Lohjanharju and Lohja was opened, but it will not be part of the national road 1 until the connection between Lohja and Muurla is finished in November 2008.
