Fimreite
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Fimreite is a hamlet in Sogndal municipality, Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway. The fjord near Fimreite saw the final battle between King Magnus, and the King Sverre, during the Norwegian Civil Wars. On June 15, 1184 Sverre attacked Magnus' fleet, which according to conservative tactics were lashed together, creating the appearance of one big fleet. Sverre broke with this tradition by sending his ships into battle in squadrons, to charge and overwhelm on one ship at a time, forcing the Magnus' men to jump over to the next. As the battle proceeded, the remaining ships became extremely crammed, and then started to go down because of the weight. King Magnus is reported to have gone down on one of the last of them.
This ability to be creative in an otherwise traditional context of warfare, carried the day for Sverre. After Magnus' death, Sverre became the sole sovereign of Norway.
