Talk:Fictional locations in The Railway Series

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This page has been flagged as being within the scope of WikiProject Thomas. WikiProject Thomas aims to develop and expand Wikipedia's content relating to the TV Series Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, as well as the original book series The Railway Series.

Planning and discussion for this project can be found on the Project page. Wikipedians are quite welcome to join us in improving the quality of this article, and others.
  • This is a place for information about the Fictional Locations in The Railway Series, mainly for the smaller places that don't need a full article, but containing brief information on those with large articles already.
  • NOTE THAT THIS CONTAINS INFORMATION FOR THE RAILWAY SERIES ONLY. Information on the television series will have its own article. It is partly for this reason that the original separate articles will be retained until work is complete.

Those articles that will be kept separate are (for the time being)

Small places that could have subsections here but haven't had articles before are:

  • Culdee Fell
    Kirk Machan
    Peel Godred
    Kildane
    King 'Orry's Bridge (?)
    Suddery
    Kirkronan
    Kellsthorpe Road
    Harwick

and any others that are named in articles but not as yet linked.

[edit] Initial Proof Read

Mdcollins1984, I take my hat off to you sir! Good work.

I have proof-read the article and applied minor corrections where appropriate. Would I be correct in thinking that you have essentially just copied the text from the original articles? (This is not a criticism!)

  • Yes, it was quicker to get a basic article up and running and I saw no need to rewrite everything! Mdcollins1984 10:35, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

There are a few areas that probably still need attention:

  • Tidmouth and Island of Sodor both need one-sentence summaries like Ffarquhar.

(Aside - is a true measure of a Railway Series fan someone who can type Ffarquhar without thinking about the spelling??)

  • There are still refs to the TV Series in Arlesdale, Dryaw and Gordon's Hill. These may not be as easy to remove as the others which have been given specific cross-refs.
How many other places are just in the TV series, or are significantly different - ie. is a new article necessary? Is there a danger that with all the places in both get edited by TV series fans in one place and the TV series/Railway series article's are imbalanced? We don't want two near identical articles that could be changed in one and not the other.

Mdcollins1984 10:35, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

This is a tricky one. Couldn't tell you if another article might be needed, as I know little about the TV Series. However, this page clearly states that it ONLY covers the book aspects, so really shouldn't mention the TV Series at all! We could cheat, and create a locations page to cover the TV Series aspects, but pointing here for the 'main article' (perfectly valid Wikipedia policy, if a little weird in this case) of any that might be covered twice. Yeah, not a bad plan, just to group the TV series stuff, leaving it clear for us to redirect the articles...
It just stops the vandalism from the TV series point of view. Maybe the next project. Then all the linking and interlinking for the locations can be done, if not the locos.

  • Vicarstown needs re-writing. However, the section is fine for its original location (where it should perhaps stay, with a new cross-ref to here?).
Do you mean leave the article where it was with a brief summary a la Ffarquhar or just to re-write it... Mdcollins1984 10:35, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
You swine, you...you beat me to it. :o) Pressed 'preview' and there was somone else's edits all over it! Tee-hee!
I think we should leave Vickerstown#Vicarstown as it is. To avoid edits in the wrong place, I have pointed here as the 'Main Article' ! EdJogg 11:48, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
Sorry!! Mdcollins1984 16:19, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

  • Maps? OK, so a full set are available via Sodor (fictional island), but as this article is all about locations, we should at least say where the maps are available, and probably ought to provide at least one on this page.
    Yep good plan.
  • All the loco (etc) links are to the individual pages, rather than the 'Post-Project' locations. These will need updating once character entries specific to The Railway Series are available.
I was aware of that - althouth most of the links are to the top 10 engines which were keeping their pages anyway. Some smaller ones I have interpage-linked but didn't really concentrate on that yet! Mdcollins1984 10:35, 27 July 2006 (UTC)
I never suggested it would be an overnight job! You have done exactly as I would have. At this stage of the project it is the only sensible move. I was mentioning it here since it will require attention in the future. EdJogg 12:10, 27 July 2006 (UTC)

Now we have this page available, we can populate it with more of the smaller locations, as you suggest. The Awdrys provided stacks of information and history, so there's plenty to choose from! (But we must be careful not to water-down what we have.)

[edit] Discussion - Retain Separate Articles?

If anyone thinks that some of the 'larger' paragraphs should remain in a separate article, let's discuss it here, then the rest can be redirected.

No, no changes required, I think you have it spot-on. Sodor itself needs to remain separate as it is so much more important than all the other articles. The individual railway lines should also remain separate, as (a) they are large enough to do so, and (b) could not be usefully grouped in any sub-combination. (ie they make more sense arranged as they are).
Knowing the problems of leaving the individual articles available, they should be re-directed here as soon as possible. In 'slow time' we can sort out replacing the many links to those pages to point here instead. (Is that something a 'bot' could do?)

  • The relinking is now becoming slightly problematic due to the Locations Catagory, and the poor Thomas infobox. I have updated most of the links now in the articles themselves, even those that might be redirected, apart from all the TV/US links - there are a lot of them, but it may just be the infobox. [edit] Origins of Wellsworth

Is the name Wellsworth like Elsbridge another homage to the Rev Awdrys parish of Elsworth?

And whilst thinking about such things does anyone know where the names Tidmouth and Toryreck came from as they was "invented" about the same time as Knapford, Ffarquhar and Elsbridge?

[edit] Elsbridge Geocache

The following external link to a geocache was added to the 'disambiguation' page Elsbridge recently.
The italicised comment was added by me.

I have copied the link here (a) in case anyone's interested, and (b) because I am not convinced it is a valid External Link, and, as such, I have asked for 'policy' assistance with regard to it at the Village Pump before deciding whether to remove it from the article.
