The 2007 FIBA Asia Championship for Men is the qualifying tournament for FIBA Asia at the men's basketball tournament at the 2008 Summer Olympics at Beijing. The tournament was held in Tokushima, Japan from July 28 to August 5, 2007.
Participating teams qualified through the previous edition of this tournament and others through regional qualifiers. Since China is assured of an automatic berth at the 2008 Olympics as the host nation, the champions will automatically qualify while the two best teams excluding China qualifies for FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament 2008.
Iran won their first championship after beating 2-time silver medallists Lebanon, 74-69. Korea upended Kazakhstan to clinch third place, and the last Asian birth in the FIBA pre-Olympic tournament, together with Lebanon.

[edit] Qualifying
Japan qualified automatically as hosts, while the top five finishers of FIBA Asia Championship 2005 qualified automatically.
The different FIBA Asia subzones were given berths as follows:
Zone | Total berths | Automatically qualified | Had to qualify |
---|---|---|---|
East Asia | 5 | 3: Japan, China and Korea | 2: Chinese Taipei and Hong Kong |
Persian Gulf | 3 | 1: Qatar | 2: Kuwait and UAE |
Middle Asia | 2 | 0 | 2: Kazakhstan and India |
Southeast Asia | 2 | 0 | 2: Philippines and Indonesia |
West Asia | 4 | 2: Lebanon and Iran | 2: Jordan and Syria |
Total | 16 | 6 | 10 |
Notable teams which were unable to qualify included Uzbekistan (did not take part in Middle Asia qualifying) and 2005 Southeast Asian champion Malaysia.
The draw was held on June 6 at Tokushima. The teams were grouped first into four pots, each member of the pot is guaranteed not to face each other in the preliminary round; the top four finishers of FIBA Asia Championship 2005 are seeded in order of their finish and hence are on one pot. Japan as the host has the right to choose which group it will be under.
The draw results are shown with the teams' respective FIBA rankings prior to the draw.

After the draw was completed, Group A was rated as the "group of death" by Filipino and Jordanian press.[1][2]
Saudi Arabia withdrew from the tournament; Kuwait replaced them.[3]
[edit] Format
- The teams will be divided into four groups (Groups A-D) for the preliminary round.
- Round robin for the preliminary round; the top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals.
- Group A's and C's topnotchers are grouped with Group B's and D's runners-up (Group I) while Group A's and C's runners-up are grouped with Group B's and D's topnotchers (Group II) for a round-robin play.
- The topnotcher of Group I meets the runner-up of Group II while the topnotcher of Group II meets the runner-up of Group I in the sudden-death semifinals.
- The winners in the semifinals dispute the championship, and a place at the Olympics.
- Consolation rounds:
- Teams eliminated from the preliminary round will be split into two groups (III and IV), in the same way as Groups I and II were split; the teams with the same positions play for the 9th place (group winners), 11th place (group runners-up), and so on.
- Teams eliminated from the quarterfinals will play for the fifth place in the same process as the semifinals are conducted.
- Teams eliminated from the semifinals will play for the third place, and a place at the pre-Olympic qualifying tournament.
[edit] Tie-breaking criteria
Ties are broken via the following the criteria, with the first option used first, all the way down to the last option:
- Head to head results
- Goal average (not the goal difference) between the tied teams
- Goal average of the tied teams for all teams in its group
[edit] Squads
The 16 teams had rosters of 12 people each.
