Fezensac family

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The House of Fézensac is a cadet branch of the House of Gascony. It is one of oldest families in France. In 926, with the death of García II Sánchez of Gascony, his three sons divided Gascony:

Sancho IV inherited Gascony and the ducal title,

William inherited Fézensac and Armagnac,

Arnold inherited Astarac.

From these three brothers descend the families of Armagnac, of Montesquiou, of Marsan, of Artagnan. The county of Fezensac contained the cities of Auch, of Vic and all of Armagnac. The name of Fezensac was renewed by Louis XVI in 1777 to be carried by the head of the house, which was then, as is now, represented by Montesquiou family.
