From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hi Fergananim, I tried to leave but got up to my neck again in it, if you see the recent spat. One quality I greatly admire is fairness, and I hope WP keeps that way. I agree about the highhingship etc, and I suppose it's more complex. When I read the history of some neighbouring nations, on WP, I then realise that the Irish sections are very true to the facts. I come to it from a simpler format, in that Ireland was fairly a one culture Gaelic island. Some folks would say that Ireland was never one, and that suits their view. Historically Ireland was one in my interpretation. Gaeilge was spoken from north to south, pretty much on that basis. The very first line isn't mine. I knew it was risky, thanks. Unfortunately uploading that photo would almost certainly be in violation of the copyright of the New York Times and/or the photographer. [edit] Miles de Courcy, 1st Baron Kingsale

I have added a {{prod}} to the article Miles de Courcy, 1st Baron Kingsale, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article is an unsourced myth. (See also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may contest the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process; unless I am convinced, however, I will submit it to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you endorse deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please tag it with {{db-author}}. [edit] Re:Golden age etc

Hi Fergananim, I just dropped that one to Angus and ran away, had no clue where to start wikifying. But you will be disappointed if you're looking forward to examining my work unless you read Norwegian, and maybe even if you do. Here at en:wiki I've only written a stub about the Battle of Tara and expanded Áed Findliath a bit , on Norwegian language wiki I got stuck in the middle of Early mediaval Ireland, while it's IMHO a better start than en:wikis Early Medieval Ireland 800–1166 it's still far to go and I'm not making progress... Nowadays I'm mainly contributing at Commons, wielding a mop and trying to make myself useful without actually writing anything. But I'm glad to see you're back, might just give me inspiration to at least translate something into Norwegian one of these days. Regards, Finn Rindahl 00:10, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Empty Irish year pages

Not a good idea starting empty pages. At least add something. Admin can just come along and delete them for having no content. Ah its ok though if you are going back to it within hours. All the best ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 01:05, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Yeah I saw you had been filling it in after my first message. Keep up the good work. I own a pub in Dublin which doubles for rocket launching site!. I bid you adeau. ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 11:51, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

I am interested in most history and a lot else too!!, but I have to say rural Ireland looks beautiful. My mum is always saying how lovely Ireland is! Coincidentally I have a DK eyewitness guide to Ireland on the bed at this moment! I think it is a very good idea to start the years pages by country particularly further back in time as it makes the encyclopedia more complete. The only Irish related article I started recently was Patrick Kielty Almost Live, but this of course is certainly not Irish but Northern Irish!! ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 12:12, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Well the best of luck for that. I was browsing through some Irish history articles the other day and was quite impressed by all the different clans and all that!! Any work you do is always appreciated by me and many others. It would take 3000 years to read everything wouldn't it!! Now I have to go feed by kitty Mr. Bigglesworth a duck stolen from Her Majesty's Pond. Adios ♦ Sir Blofeld ♦ "Talk"? 12:22, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your recent edits

Hi there. In case you didn't know, when you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion, you should sign your posts by typing four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment. On many keyboards, the tilde is entered by holding the Shift key, and pressing the key with the tilde pictured. You may also click on the signature button Image:Wikisigbutton.png located above the edit window. This will automatically insert a signature with your name and the time you posted the comment. This information is useful because other editors will be able to tell who said what, and when. Thank you! --SineBot 12:18, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Your edits to User:SineBot

First of all, when talking to users, put your comments on the talk page -- the discussion tab link at the top of the page when you're on their user page. Second of all... SineBot is an automated bot so it can't hear you when you talk to it. Any username with bot it its name is (almost) always a bot, just so you know. Gscshoyru 15:11, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Gaelic

Hey, how are you Fergananim. I was curious if you are fluent in Gaelic, I know very little Gaelic and was wondering if you could translate some articles of mine for the Gaelic wikipedia. The Gaelic Encyclopedia is lacking and I figure more articles could help promote the language. Thanks. -RiverHockey 21:33, 1 November 2007 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for responding, things are ok in Pittsburgh, what's your relation to the city? No big deal with O'Bruadair I put him in the Category:Irish Roman Catholics and another user removed it. I decided to let it go rather than argue about a category. To change or reword a title, you just click move at the top of the screen and then select the new title. If you need help with a specific page let me know. By the way you mean South Park the tv show? Good to hear from you. Thanks. -RiverHockey 20:14, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Speedy deletion of Thomas of Echternach

A tag has been placed on Thomas of Echternach requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. [edit] Pol

I had a peek at Pol Bretnach. Nice! Your next mission, should you choose to accept it, is to write something about John MacNeill, no not him, Eoin Mac Neill (1867-1945), scholar and revolutionary. It's not that many people's books are still in print fifty years after they died. Go on, spoil yourself! I haven't done anything exciting myself, but I have plans for Brian Boru for after the new year. Would be nice to get it tied up a bit. Anyway, hope you're doing better. [edit] Mac Fhirbhisigh

Hmm, they like footnotes and inline references for everything in featured articles these days. I don't know it will do.

There are other people working on stuff would be interested in what you're up to. We have a new bod called User:Timelinefrog who seems quite keen on Irish history. User:Dsmdgold likes manuscripts and stuff - he should be just the person for working on the Mac Fhirbhisigh bloke - and User:Ealdgyth seems to be interested in medieval stuff in general. Anything Medieval you should leave a note at Wikipedia:WikiProject Middle Ages/New Articles. Might get some interest and can't hurt! You should list them at Wikipedia:WikiProject Ireland#New Wikipedia articles related to Ireland articles as well, otherwise they'll never find them! There's a Viking WikiProject, the name of which I can never remember, that would interested in anything to do with Vikings, however tenuous the link.

I'm meaning to get to working on Irish stuff again as soon as I've tidied up some of my old Scottish rubbish. Fancy a collaborative effort? Let me know if there's anything in particular you would like to do. Angus McLellan (Talk) 00:10, 6 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] How's you?

Long time no see. Hope you're doing ok. The bold Timelinefrog is busy with Irish kings while as for me, I'm kind of snowed under and not really doing much at all. Glad to see you around, Angus McLellan (Talk) 20:07, 19 April 2008 (UTC)

Mainly I've been avoiding working on Flann Sinna it seems. I did, however, do a bit of work on Cormac mac Cuilennáin, Niall Caille, Donnchad Midi and Domnall Midi. Main thing I'd like to do next is to expand Muirchertach Mac Ercae and Diarmait mac Cerbaill, but what I should do is work on the Ua Briain, Ua Conchobair and Mac Lochlainn. We'll see. Angus McLellan (Talk) 20:21, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Flann Mainistrech is more your kind of thing than mine. Angus McLellan (Talk) 23:27, 27 April 2008 (UTC)
Well, I buggered around with Laidcenn mac Bairchid, but I doubt if it's much of an improvement. I'm not sure I know anything useful about the rest of the stuff you've written. Angus McLellan (Talk) 12:30, 1 May 2008 (UTC)

I have nominated The Chronicle of Ireland 1992-1996, an article you created, for deletion. [edit] Overcategorisation

Hi Ferganim

I notice athat a lot of your recent editing has been of articles on Irish Kings, which is great, but please may I draw your attention to WP:SUBCAT? An article should not be in both a category and a sub-category of that category.

I am removing some of the overcategorisation I have found, and just thought I'd point this out for future reference. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs)

[edit] Tethbae

I did an article on Tethbae and added some stuff on the Cenél Maini to it. The books I have for now more or less stop after Clontarf. Byrne says Tethbae (I think he means the north) became part of Bréifne, so I put that in. Looking at the maps in Duffy's atlas, he shows Tethba in the "Ireland before the Normans" map, ruled by the Ua Fergail, and later on there are O'Farrells not far away. Do you know anything about Tethbae/Longford in later times? Angus McLellan (Talk) 22:49, 12 May 2008 (UTC)
