was the novel initially written in polish or french? thanks.

A: It was written in Polish. Borchardt's is the second translation. The first was written in a stilted, old-fashioned style often used in translations of eastern European literature, but Borchardt's translation is livelier.

[edit] Borchardt translation

I'd like to object to the glowing mini-review of Danuta Borchardt's English translation. For one thing, it's clearly not NPOV. For another, I'm in the midst of reading Borchardt's translation, and, frankly, I think it's pretty poor. I think mentioning that she is the first to translate it directly from Polish into English and also to say that it's a recent translation would be enough. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 62.111.245.242 (talk) 17:14, 20 December 2007 (UTC)
