[edit] Playing career

[edit] Club

Fernando spent the vast majority of his career at his hometown club Valencia CF from 1983 to 1998. He would garner a reputation as an outstanding playmaker who boasted an exceptional scoring record from midfield, and would also captain the side. He played a club record 423 games for them and is also the club's fourth highest scorer, with 142 goals in all competitions.

He made his debut for the club on January 15, 1984, against Real Valladolid, after moving up from the club's 'B' team CD Mestalla. He truly came to the forefront in the 1986/87 season as the team won promotion back to La Liga at the first attempt. Aside from this season, he spent all his time with Valencia in the top flight, where he twice finished runner-up in the championship. He also had to settle for a runners-up spot in the Copa del Rey of 1995.

The midfielder won the Don Balón award of Best Spanish player in the 1988/89 season and broke into the national team later that year.

He finally left the club in August 1998 to join English First Division side Wolverhampton Wanderers on a free transfer. However, he spent only one year with Wolves before returning to Spain with Segunda División team CD Castellón.

After a solitary season playing for Castellon, he retired in 2000. He remained at the club though, as sporting director. He currently works as a sports commentator on radio and television.

[edit] International

Fernando earned 8 caps and scored 2 goals for the Spanish national team from 1989 to 1992. He made his international debut on November 15, 1989 in a 4-0 World Cup qualifying win over Hungary in Seville.

He was subsequently selected for the squad for the 1990 World Cup, where he made a substitute appearance in the 3-1 Group Stage win over South Korea.

He had earlier represented Spain at youth level in the 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship, where Fernando joint-topscored with 3 goals en route to the final.
