Sen. Fern Shubert
Fern H. Shubert is a Republican member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing the state's thirty-fifth Senate district, including constituents in Mecklenburg and Union counties. An accountant from Marshville, North Carolina, Shubert is currently (2003-2004 session) serving in her first term in the state Senate, where she holds the position of Republican Whip. Previously, Shubert served three terms in the state House.
Fern Shubert was one of the candidates for the Republican gubernatorial nomination to challenge Governor Mike Easley in the 2004 election. The sole woman in a field of six contenders for the GOP nomination, Shubert campaigned as an outsider to the party establishment, but placed fifth in the primary, gathering only 4% of votes cast.
