The Fern Rock Transportation Center is a SEPTA rail and bus transportation center located at 10th Street and Nedro Avenue in the Fern Rock neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.[1] Fern Rock serves as the northern terminus and yard for SEPTA's Broad Street Line, as well as a stop for the R1, R2, R3, and R5 SEPTA Regional Rail Lines. Four SEPTA bus lines also serve Fern Rock Transportation Center.

[edit] Broad Street Line

Fern Rock Transportation Center became the northern terminus of the Broad Street Line in 1956, when the Broad Street Line was extended north from the original northern terminus at Olney Transportation Center. Fern Rock Transportation Center also hosts the yard and maintenance facilities for the Broad Street Line.

All local and express trains on the Broad Street Line terminate at Fern Rock Transportation Center. All the Special Sport Express trains that run to the Sports Complex at Pattison station also originate at Fern Rock. Broad Ridge Spur trains usually serve Fern Rock only during non-peak hours and on Saturdays.[2]

[edit] Regional Rail

Fern Rock Transportation Center serves the R1 Airport line, the R2 Warminster, R3 West Trention line, and the R5 Lansdale-Doylestown.[3] In FY 2005, there were an average of 928 boardings and 798 alightings per weekday at the Regional Rail station at Fern Rock Transportation Center. [4]

The current SEPTA Regional Rail station at Fern Rock Transportation Center, located along the SEPTA Main Line, opened in 1992. The new station replaced old Regional Rail stations Fern Rock and Fishers. The Regional Rail station, which has high-level platforms and is handicap accessible, is connected to the subway station by a ramp from the subway platform. While passengers can readily transfer between the Broad Street Line and the Regional Rail Line at Fern Rock, such a transfer requires payment of a separate fare of the subway and regional rail, unless the rider possesses a SEPTA Trailpass, which can be used for travel on both subway and regional rail.

[edit] Buses

Four bus routes serve Fern Rock Transportation Center. Fern Rock Transportation Center serves as the western terminus for the bus routes 28 and 70. [5] [6] Fern Rock is also the northernmost terminus for the route 57 bus.[7] Alternating SEPTA C buses also terminate at Eleventh Street and Nedro Avenue, a block east of Fern Rock Transportation Center.
