Talk:Feline leukemia virus
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I'll be working on adding info to this page over the next undefined period of time... unfortunately, my one-year-old Jackson has finally developed symptoms of his FeLV, so I hope I'll be able to help someone else deal with this by creating a very accessible document like I did when Pumpkin died. No one should have to go through this blindly. Allie 04:37, 28 October 2006 (UTC)
My cat, Fifi died this morning. She was feline leukemia positive, but never developed any symptoms. She was about 17 when she died. Best wishes for you and Jackson. DEL 66.57.225.77 04:46, 3 November 2006 (UTC)
How long does this take to go into effect? My cat Goofy was diagnosed with it about four or five years ago, but has yet to show any symptoms the vet told us about. A point of interest, though, my other cat, Astro, was never diagnosed with it, but had shown several symptoms and died within a year of Goofy's diagnosis. However, the two weren't at the vet at the same time, so I don't think it was a blood test mix up. Can anyone offer a clear-up? --12.207.142.70 (talk) 05:41, 24 December 2007 (UTC)
- It can take years for a FeLV positive cat to show symptoms. One possibility in your case is that both cats were tested early on in the infection. Goofy may have eliminated his infection after the positive test - only about 30 percent remain positive, but it takes up to 16 weeks post infection before they would test negative again. Only retesting Goofy would answer that question. Astro, on the other hand, may have been tested within a couple of weeks of catching it - he would have still tested negative. Or he contracted it from Goofy after his negative test. Or the virus was only in his bone marrow and not in his blood. Of course, any current concerns about Goofy's health should be taken up with your vet. --Joelmills (talk) 21:02, 24 December 2007 (UTC)

- Ah, that does make sense. It's really confusing how diseases and viruses work, isn't it? Thank you for the answer, and sorry on the late reply. --12.207.142.70 (talk) 05:39, 1 January 2008 (UTC)
