Felidae:Evolution I read in the Felidae article that Panthera species are the oldest and the felis species the youngest. May I say that this is not true(or the autor wrote it wrong);Pantherine cats are known as "New world cats",the pantherine ancestors were cats placed in the felinae subfamily, cats of the genus felis are ancestors of both, acynonix and pantherine species. Early felis species lived around 11 m.a.,such as Miracinonyx intermediatus(which is claimed to be an ancestor of the cheetah),M.intermediatus(also called Felis intermediatus) had retractable claws and it was not a "true" cheetah, panthera species such as panthera gombaszoegensis were more "modern" felids( 4 m.a). In the present biologists say that the oldest living cats appear in south america such as the ocelot and the jaguar. The iriomote cat is supposed to be a primitive feline because scientists say that they´re anatomically related to pseudaelurus.
