FASEB was founded in 1912 by three societies. In 1989, its then six constituent societies agreed to broaden the scope of the federation and has since grown to currently 21 individual member organizations:[1]

Its mission statement is "to advance biological science through collaborative advocacy for research policies that promote scientific progress and education and lead to improvements in human health".[1]
