Syria operated under a federalist system during its period of French rule (between 1920 and 1946). Its constituents were organized on primarily ethno-religious lines: there were separate states for Maronites, Alawites, Druze and Turks. The federal system was abolished after the Syrian independence in 1946. The constituents of Syria were:
