The Federal Reserve Units or better known with abbreviation as FRU was established as a special team can be instructed regardless of time to act positively and systematic on any riot or illegal assembly that happens in Malaysia.

This team established before Malaysia achieved independence viz on 5 December 1955. Starting with 3 troops in the early his establishment, FRU has been wrought success overcome the problem public order as strike and riot that happens in early years 1950 an. By year end 1990 an, FRU also play a role in deeper an important handle riot sparked arrested result Anwar Ibrahim.

This team role is specific to disperse illegal assembly, riot suppression and carry out other functions relating with the situation Public Order. This unit is self-contained and capable, bermobiliti high and become Public Tranquility Reserve Units. When this unit am not involved in duties Public Order, design can be used by Commanding Officer deep Police Chief job of helping Daerah, Criminal Invesitgation Division and Special Branch which include:-
- Task prevent crime as special patrol in addition to patrol Bit / Patrol in the area often occurs crime;
- Current membership assistance disaster (flood, fire, landslide, air crash and others ) to save the life, move people, mengepong area and prevented robberies;
- Police operation sweeping as kepongan and examination, censorship, intensive patrol and others
- Public Guard Duty during the VIP visiters, sports, parades, assemblies and others.
Owed to his role more important, this team was augmented to 7 unit, with a total membership to 2003 as many as 2,481 people. Per unit, containing 3 troops. Beside that FRU has also water canon unit, horseback unit and training institution at Sungai Senam, Ipoh, Perak. In line with current needs and law claim, and supply smoothing job performance, a woman special detachment have been spawned and this detachment based in Jalan Semarak, Kuala Lumpur.
FRU's performance this is known until to international level. This was evident during United Nations (U.N.) apply to PDRM to house riot guard force under U.N. flags in Timor Leste. This team assigning to control riot and tranquility in public a country whose just come at independence.

Each base FRU have wing headquarters with three troops (viz 'A', 'B' and 'C' troops). Each troop consisted two Baton section, viz arms rifle section / tear gas / grenade, guard vehicle section, and other member as a driver, diary recorder, photographer, translator, marksmen, signal operators and have owned reserve team.
Apart from that this team also perform the duties crime prevention bg help deep district police chief effort reduce crime rates.By that FRU have pointed out success could not be disputed more when entrust to royal pennant parade in the line of honor guard duties.

Several FRU troops like those determined by Internal Security and Public Order Director maintained as IGP's reserves. They do not may be assigned except with the directive or with prior get approval from the director.

- Event May 13, 1969 - Deployed during the racial riots to control the situation.
- Involved in the arrest of Ibrahim Libya in the Memali Incident in Baling, Kedah.
- 1997 - Deployed to suppress the resulting street demonstrations after Dato' Sri Anwar Ibrahim was put into jail for alleged corruption and homosexual practices.
- 2007 - Deployed to disperse the Hindu Rights Action Force (HINDRAF) during their peaceful demonstration in the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur.
