[edit] Faulty endashes

Just to point out, I removed the IMDb ref on his name, since that's not a reliable source. Plus one's name doesn't need sourcing. Wizardman 23:59, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

An editor running for admin added that, not the nominating editor. –Mattisse (Talk) 00:18, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
It has been pointed out on Epbr123's RfA and on your talk page that this is incorrect. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:41, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
Apparently I may have been wrong in reverting an edit that put numbers rather than the spelling out of numbers in the beginning of a sentence. Will someone please straighten me out on this? –Mattisse (Talk) 01:27, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
The numbers were not at the beginning of sentences. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:41, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

There are endashes throughout that should be hyphens,[1] and it's not necessary to change hard-coded endashes to html endashes;[2] I recommend asking User:Epbr123 to do a complete run-through to correct the faulty endashes. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 02:45, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Please calm down. I added n-dashes to scores only as that was the previous practice. User talk:Nurmsook quickly reverted those particular edits, so there is no need to panic over n-dashes. All I did was add them to a few scores, in accord with the previous practice that used to be a big deal if that requirement was neglected. What ever other n-dashes you are concerned about have nothing to do with me. And further, in my perusal of the article, I did not notice any. –Mattisse (Talk) 03:03, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

Mattisse: please do not upset this FAC over minor dash matters and misunderstandings of diffs, edits and guidelines, already clarified on your talk page.[3] The IMDb source was not introduced by Epbr123, so I have removed that comment from the FAC page to here. You are correct that MoS says sentences should not start with numbers, but the numbers were not at the beginning of sentences. I did not say that you introduced the faulty endashes; they pre-date Epbr123's simple corrections and can easily be fixed by anyone; this is not a significant issue. Also, to clarify, there has never been a requirement for html endashes in any article at any time nor has this ever been a requirement at FAC; you can review WP:DASH if you are unconvinced. Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:41, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

I am copying this here as well; once you're read and acknowledged it, I will also remove it from the main FAC page, as it is unfair to the nominator to have his FAC derailed by discussions to clarify guidelines. The discussion of misunderstood guidelines should continue here. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 03:52, 10 June 2008 (UTC)

  • User:Nishkid64, though not the general factotum, quotes the opposite point of view (the old, displace one regarding n-dashes) in his comments under Zhang Heng. (I realize you are removing this discussion to the talk page so that it will not be clarified in public.)

"*For the win-loss record, that's not a range, so I'm fairly sure it should just be a hyphen, not an en dash.
No, win-loss record requires an en dash. 7–9 not 7-9. See WP:DASH. Nishkid64 (Make articles, not wikidrama) 14:39, 9 June 2008 (UTC)
Please clarify for all of us. –Mattisse (Talk) 03:29, 10 June 2008 (UTC)
As correctly stated by Nishkid, scores require endashes. They do not require html endashes; the hard-coded endashes that this article used were fine. It is not necessary to change a direct endash to an html endash. Further discussion on the talk page please, or please see WP:DASH or Dash to understand an html endash in relation to other completely acceptable ways of entering an endash.
