[edit] Portal:Wales
After the success of my last portal, Portal:North West England, I followed a similar pattern with the Welsh portal. I've pretty much done the same with various selections of featured articles, a diverse number of selected pictures, DYKs, topics, categories, news items etc. I submit it here for consideration, after a recent peer review. Thank you. Rudget. 15:20, 20 March 2008 (UTC)
Weak-ishsupport. Only 9 selected articles, but the rest of the portal seems good to me. WEBURIEDOURSECRETSINTHEGARDEN tell me a joke... 20:13, 20 March 2008 (UTC)- There's only nine featured articles relating to Wales, I think. I could include the GA's as well if you wish? Rudget. 11:02, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, I think it'd be a good idea to also add in the GA's. Cirt (talk) 07:34, 22 March 2008 (UTC)
- Y Done - I've also increased the amount of images. Rudget. 13:10, 23 March 2008 (UTC)

- Comments
- Could use a "Selected biography" section, which is currently missing. Cirt (talk) 02:35, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Have you considered using Wikinews Importer Bot for the "Wales news" section? Cirt (talk) 02:35, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Y Done hopefully it'll work. Rudget. 11:30, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- I think you missed a step where you create Portal:Wales/Wales news/Wikinews and then transclude that to the news subpage, per the instructions at User:Wikinews Importer Bot ? Cirt (talk) 07:34, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

- Categories would look nicer with categorytree and 2 columns, see Portal:Indiana for an example. Cirt (talk) 02:35, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Some of the "Selected article" blurbs have the bolded title wikilinked, but some don't. Cirt (talk) 02:35, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Some of the images at "Selected picture" could have links for the credits, for example instead of "anonymous user at flickr" give a link to the user's page, or to where the image was obtained from. Cirt (talk) 02:35, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Portal:Wales/Did you know could do with randomization, so it doesn't get stale. Cirt (talk) 02:35, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Not much need, since I'll be updating it every two weeks or so. Rudget. 11:08, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- "WikiProjects" could do with a little formatting, see for example Portal:Sustainable development. Cirt (talk) 02:35, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Also, see Portal:Sustainable development for some idea of how to make the "Topics" box look a bit nicer. Cirt (talk) 02:35, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Pretty much fine as it is, quite a bit better than some other featured portals and similar to Portal:North West England. Rudget. 11:32, 21 March 2008 (UTC)
- Oppose. Nice portal overall, but their is no selected biography (as Cirt mentioned.)
and no subpages for DYKs, which Cirt also mentioned. Portal:North West England's DYK has become stale, hence.I can't offer my support until this issue have been addressed. Qst (talk) 18:04, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- Also, the selected pictures need some captions so when you hover over them, you don't just see the name of the image. Qst (talk) 18:05, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- Welsh articles are in a pretty poor state, and all the good biographies are in the selected article subsections, so therefore not much I can do. There are subsections for DYK however, and they are randomised. Rudget. 18:10, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- Oh, yes - there are DYKs in operation; my apologies, I must have missed that. But the selected biographies should be used, I'd recommend ten to put in to circulation, and there are currently 140 B-class articles relating to Wales, so they should be okay to use for biographies. Thanks, Qst (talk) 18:15, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- Comment: Looks like you forgot the "layout" part of the "Selected biography" section (perhaps also for "Selected article" section too?) Check out WP:FPORT -- Portal:Sustainable development/Selected biography for an example of how to do that. Cirt (talk) 23:23, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- Yeah, just checked and Portal:Wales/Selected article could also benefit from the "layout" format used in Portal:Sustainable development and other WP:FPORTs. Cirt (talk) 23:25, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, I offered to help out with the selected biographies, so I feel its relevant for me to comment here. I would use the layout, but I don't think it looks that different from using just a regular copy and paste. As well as this plus, the image appears on the left using the layout, and when you try to make it go to the right, it messes up the entire layout. Of course, however - this is Rudget's call. Qst (talk) 23:55, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- It doesn't seem that much different to me, but I'm involved with this, so it wouldn't. Do you think, if not implemented, it could effectively ruin the reading of an extract? Rudget. 14:58, 24 March 2008 (UTC)
- Not necessarily, but it could for some. Uniform use of "layout" in all selected subsections will also make it much easier for new editors to the portal to figure out how to add selections in a standardized format. I still think that the portal could do with a "Selected biography" section. Cirt (talk) 22:34, 24 March 2008 (UTC)

Withdrawing so I can update and change appropriately. Still needs some work. Rudget. 11:16, 25 March 2008 (UTC)
