[edit] Portal:France
I am nominating Portal:France for Featured Portal status for the following reasons:
- The portal's article, person and image of the month features have been consistently maintained since September 2005.
- The portal went through a portal peer review this past summer (see Wikipedia:Portal peer review/France/archive1).
- The news updates section (which was probably the weakest area previously) has been recently revamped and is being better maintained.
- NYArtsnWords (talk) 17:39, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment Do you think the Topics section too long? I feel overwhelmed to see 2-3 web pages long of topics. OhanaUnitedTalk page 18:09, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
- Response: Visually, I don't know if the France portal's topics section feels excessively long compared to, say, the dense one page topics section at Portal:London, a featured portal... especially given the fact that the France portal will obviously have more geography topics, etc. I could perhaps remove/shorten the section on heads of government/state and/or the map. It should be noted that rather than have a separate France category tree section (like the London portal), we have tried to bring the categories and topics sections together. - NYArtsnWords (talk) 22:03, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
- Support esp. since the news section is now getting a regular supply of stories. I think however that:
- The categories should be in a category tree
- It should be organised into 3 parts (like Portal:Zimbabwe or Portal:European Union) ChrisDHDR 18:07, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
- Response: The issue of the three-part tab style came up in our peer review. As I said then, I am not sure that wiki users are familiar enough yet with the tabs style and I worry that, for uninitiated users, putting "projects" etc. in tabs (like on the Zimbabwe portal) isn't tantamount to just burying them (there are few enough people doing France-related articles and consulting the France Portal or Wiki Project France to hide the "task board" and list of projects!). I could imagine, however, that the geography/administrative divisions sections might be put in a tab. Doing tabs style would also be a major over-haul, and I fear that it might send the portal back to peer review, rather than building off of the recent peer review. As for a category tree, that is relatively easy to do, although I admit that I have a preference for keeping the categories and the topics together as they are now (which seems logical to me). - NYArtsnWords (talk) 20:18, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
- Further Response: I have put in tabs and put the administrative and geographic section in their own subpage, while putting a (new) category tree and the topics section in another section. Hope that resolves issues.- NYArtsnWords (talk) 02:57, 29 November 2007 (UTC)
- Support, perfect. feydey 17:42, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment - WikiProject section with Wikipedia:WikiProject France + others? — Rudget contributions 10:43, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- Response: Done. I added a Wikiproject France navbar below the "task board". - NYArtsnWords 16:00, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- Support - now looks good enough for FPO status. — Rudget contributions 16:04, 1 December 2007 (UTC)
- Looks better now, I'll support OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:35, 2 December 2007 (UTC)
- Comment - Who decides how and when content is changed/updated/switched out for different content? This portal could use some implementation with {{Random portal component}}, so that more of these updating tasks are automatic and easier. Cirt (talk) 01:26, 5 December 2007 (UTC).
- Response: Content on article/person/picture of the month is changed monthly. Since the portal's inception, I have personally maintained these features (criteria for person of the month are listed under the archive). News and DYK is currently updated regularly by members of WikiProject France. Implementation with {{Random portal component}} would be helpful if there was a greater number of feature or good quality articles/images on French topics than are currently available (see statistics on WikiProject France). Ideally, WikiProject France could eventually take over maintenance of the portal (including nomination of content), but the WP is not yet, I fear, active enough to insure this. - NYArtsnWords (talk) 04:43, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:North West England
Hello. I've never been at FPO before, and I've read the comments at the top of the page, but I'm still quite in the dark about what actually is a featured portal. Nevertheless, I am self-nominating a portal, the one about North West England, for further comment. I've carried out all the steps necessary at the peer review which is archived here. I've followed all the steps and have done some more. Hopefully it'll meet the critera that has been layed out on here, all of which I've complied with. Thank you in advance. All comments will be taken constuctively. Rudget.talk 18:19, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
- For first timers, you did a great job in creating and updating this portal. I already did some minor adjustments. I would like to suggest that you should put more selected biographies, pictures, and articles. Try to aim for 10 or above in each of those sections that I mentioned. You seem to be lucky to have Spebi to review the portal, cause Sebi knows a lot of portals. With that much said, if you can made those improvements mentioned, I'll support this nomination. OhanaUnitedTalk page 21:40, 22 November 2007 (UTC)
- Uh oh, I found a fair-use image (Image:Fifabox.jpg). Please remove ALL fair-use image that are used in the portal. OhanaUnitedTalk page 20:16, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
- Support - A very nice looking portal with a great support network behind it! └and-rew┘┌talk┐ 21:48, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment- Down below the portal two templates are just dumped which seems to detoriate the flow of the portal. kindly place these templates under appropriate sections within portal subsections. also change the section name from Features to Featured content (it would sound better). rest i appreciate your efforts in constructing this portal. thanks, Sushant gupta (talk) 11:30, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
- Support- Good work! Sushant gupta (talk) 15:40, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment: You've a great job. A few suggestions —
-
- In the introduction box, More about the North West ... → More about North West England... (without the space between England and ...).Y Done
- Some box headers are italicized and some are not (for example, the featured content and categories boxes). I would suggest choosing one or the other.Y Done
- i have italicized the headers. Sushant gupta (talk) 15:22, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
- Could you lessen the space between Change selections and the boxes below it? Y Done
- Did you know that... → Did you know... since the that is repeated in the questions below (for example, Did you know that... and ...that Manchester is the UK's fastest economically growing city?)? Y Done
- Could you change Suggest a Did You Know? → Suggest and move it to the right (like the selected content boxes)? Y Done
- You might consider adding photo credits to each selected picture (see Chemistry portal). Y Done
- Some boxes use : - (such as the news box), but the topics box uses just a : ; I think the portal should use either : - or : . Y Done
- Cheers, [sd] 12:45, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
- I added credits before, but was asked to remove them. :S — Rudget contributions 16:22, 27 November 2007 (UTC)
- Just one more suggestion — instead of having WikiProject:, Main page, Discussion, Participants, Assessment, and Templates links in the lists box, you could make a new WikiProjects box (see the West Bengal portal for an example). Only links to the WikiProject's main page are needed. Also, other than the Greater Manchester WikiProject, the UK Geography, England, and Cheshire WikiProjects also apply to North West England (see its talk page). I've also made a few edits, but other than that, the portal looks good. Regards, [sd] 12:12, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:British Empire
Self-nom. The portal was recently peer reviewed, with all issues addressed. It's exhaustive ergonomic, and meets the criteria in my opinion, I hope you agree. Cheers, — Chris.B | talk 12:45, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment - It looks excellent to me. But is there a need for the "British overseas territories" & "British Empire and Commonwealth of Nations" sections? It seems to contain overlapping information and it makes the page longer. But apart from that. Rudget.talk 14:35, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
- I'm glad you liked it :). The "British overseas territories" box was quite curiously the last thing I added amid some uncertainty. I was never very fond it anyway, so I've removed it altogether. The whole portal is more concise now, although I am more than willing to chop off anything else if need be. — Chris.B | talk 15:02, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
- Your right I do like it. It deserves FPO now, in my opinion. It's also good to see you've carried out all peer review suggestions. Therefore, I support this nomination. Rudget.talk 15:04, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
- Congratulations on your good work on this portal. A few suggestions —
-
- Since you have More articles... and More pictures..., I would suggest changing More Biographies... to More biographies... and More new articles (in the Did you know... box) to More new articles....
- I think the More at Category:British Empire wikilink isn't needed since the category tree below already links there.
- In the Related portals box, What are portals? | List of portals | Featured portals isn't needed since it is already at the bottom on the portal.
- In my opinion, since there is already Show new selections, Purge server cache isn't needed at the bottom.
- However, since these are minor, I support. You might also want to consider removing
{{Shortcut|[[P:BE]]}}
from the introduction (see this discussion). Regards, [sd] 00:39, 25 November 2007 (UTC)- Done. Thanks, — Chris.B | talk 10:38, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
- Suggestion- Can you please expand the list for tasks so that it is easier to access those pages which needs attention. for instance please add on the links for some of the article whcih needs to be expanded, cleanup etc. also try to create a category for pages needing attention related to british empire. rest all is cool. thanks, Sushant gupta (talk) 10:56, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
-
- Done, well partly. I am unsure whether I should create such a category, first because it would be a bit of a self-reference and secondly it would not be in line with other portals. Otherwise, the tasks section has been tidied up as you suggested. Thanks, — Chris.B | talk 11:37, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
- why don't you start up the category under the parentage of Wikipedia:WikiProject European history. cheers, Sushant gupta (talk) 15:45, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Rugby union
Self-nomination I believe that this portal meets all the featured portal criteria. It has lots of content and is updated often. The portal has undergone a peer review and all the issues were addressed. - Shudde talk 20:18, 5 December 2007 (UTC)
- Only two concerns. The heading introduction box's top isn't italicised like the others and there is no topic box. See Portal:North West England for an example of one. I'm sure once that is done, I'll support. — Rudget speak.work 15:44, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
- Support: as reviewer. Happy editing, [sd] 23:39, 6 December 2007 (UTC)
- Support. A couple things: Topics could be changed to Main Topics, and a small image/icon would be nice in that section, as well as in the "Things you can do", "Recent news", "Wikiprojects", and "Did you know" sections. I see you have some material on a selected schedule. Are there enough committed editors taking care of that, or would randomizing some more stuff reduce some of the workload? Cirt (talk) 11:23, 7 December 2007 (UTC).
- Could you please be more specific about the images/icons you are thinking of? Is there an example I can see? The only thing on a schedule is the selected article. It's only one article a month and I'm pretty sure that WikiProject Rugby union can handle that. - Shudde talk 02:58, 8 December 2007 (UTC)
- Sure, see the Featured Portal, Portal:Sustainable development, for some examples of images and icons used to add flavor to certain sections. Cirt (talk) 04:44, 9 December 2007 (UTC).

[edit] Portal:Scientology
Self-nomination. The portal has 10 selected articles, 10 selected biographies, 10 selected pictures, 15 selected hooks from articles that have appeared at Did you know?, and 20 quotations from individuals with preexisting articles on Wikipedia. Each of the entries in the selected article, biography, picture, Did you know? and quote sections are randomly chosen and the portal can be purged to show new selections. The article was modeled primarily after elements from featured portals Portal:Sustainable development and Portal:Psychology. I have to acknowledge Warlordjohncarter (talk · contribs) for creating the portal initially, and RichardF (talk · contribs) for his expertise and advice about portals.
The portal has had a Portal peer review, and many suggestions from RichardF (talk · contribs) and Sd31415 (talk · contribs) were incorporated into changes to the portal to improve its quality further. Cirt (talk) 01:02, 5 December 2007 (UTC).
- Support as one of the reviewers. I added a featured content box, which hopefully doesn't disturb your spacing and formatting. Happy editing, [sd] 01:50, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Ireland
The portal was dormant for a long time. I want to put some energy back into it (I remember it being one of the first things that I looked at when I first arrived at WP). --sony-youthpléigh 16:52, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Support - at last this portal has a dedicated "owner" who does frequent updates. Looks nive and clean, has links to lots of categories and places where random editors can find topics of interest to contribute to. I like the fact that WP:FAs and Categories don't have edit buttons making it harder for vandals. It could possibly do with another selected topic, maybe a selected biography. Good luck. ww2censor 23:30, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
- Minor opposition, concerning FPC#3.4 - the portal has been actively updated just for a month - I'd like to see a longer support time. Also a peer review wouldn't hurt. A "Topics" box is the norm in geographic portals. The archival system is kinda cumbersome... Why is the trivial "Did you know..." the topmost box? feydey 10:43, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
-
- Thanks, Feyday. There was a peer review, but it didn't bring a lot of comments. I'll add a topics box. I wouldn't say that DYK is trivial (more fun), but it can be flipped around with the Selected Picture, or the newly added topics box. What's cunbersome about the archives - is a subpage perferred, lacking info, or something else? --sony-youthpléigh 11:54, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- I'd prefer a subpage for archives, it's less complicated and also tidier. feydey 12:45, 1 November 2007 (UTC)
- I've done a compromise - the archive appears in the [show]/[hide] boxes and on a subpage through the [view] linl for each box. --sony-youthpléigh 16:16, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

- Oppose: The portal has an uncommon look and format, which is refeshing; but without a page border the different portal components seem to float all over the page, which does not help make the portal look "attractive". A little bit more work needs to be put to improve the portal design. More importantly, there should be either a random rotation or a nomination-selection process for the selected components of the portal (article, picture etc.). Arman (Talk) 10:05, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
-
- Thanks for your comments, Arman.
- I don't understand the first part - which elements should be boxed: the page, columns, or all individual elements? I would be against individual boxing everything as this just leads to "box cruft".
- There is a nomination process at the bottom of the page - but this certainly can be improved (and more visible). I will work on it. A community-based selection process however sounds unrealistic considering how long the portal was 'dead'. --sony-youthpléigh 15:48, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- I've added boxes to stop sections from "floating". I've also added an "Archive" link and a "Suggest" link and form to each "suggestable" element. --sony-youthpléigh 20:22, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
- Suggestion- replace How you can help the Irish on Wikipedia... with How you can improve the Ireland related articles on Wikipedia... new format looks great. awesome portal. Sushant gupta (talk) 13:16, 18 November 2007 (UTC)

- Changed as you suggested. Thanks for the kind words! --sony-youthpléigh 14:30, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Mild support- the portal is great and i haven't seen any other portal of such sort but i was thinking if you could add in the news section also; it would then have looked perfect and complete. nice work has been put but you. cheers, Sushant gupta (talk) 15:42, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

- There was originally an "In the News" section, but Ireland-related topics on Wikinews are so infrequently updated and almost exclusively about sports that I dumped it just because it was so dirt poor. --sony-youthpléigh 17:34, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

- Strong Support- never seen such awesome portal. Sushant gupta (talk) 16:19, 20 November 2007 (UTC)
- Comment - I agree with all of Armanaziz (talk · contribs)'s points, from above. Could use some more work, formatting, stylistic changes, etc. Consider using {{Random portal component}}, for automatic randomization. There is a large space gap at bottom right. Cirt (talk) 01:30, 5 December 2007 (UTC).
- Support - Although I also would like to see maybe a biography and/or city/locale specific included instead of just the one article. John Carter (talk) 19:08, 13 December 2007 (UTC)
-
- I'm been putting some thought into comments by Cirt and John Carter. Maybe the {{Random portal component}} could be combined with the locale info suggestion to fill that hole in the bottom right. Have monthly/bi-monthly "series" e.g. counties of Ireland, League of Ireland/eircom League teams, cities of Ireland, UNESCO world heritage sites, etc. One article from each series would be randomly shown at each page view. What think? --sony-youthpléigh 14:10, 15 December 2007 (UTC)
- Categories name in the Categories section can be shortened by removing Ireland, it is the portal of Ireland, so it is well understood. e.g. Building and structures in Ireland can simply be written as Building and structures.
- Use a larger picture size in the Selected Picture section.
- Did you know... section is looking insane. Either reduce the picture size to best fit the first fact or increase the size of right half. Shyam (T/C) 13:33, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
- I agree. But I wouldn't call that insane, I call that misaligned. OhanaUnitedTalk page 19:53, 23 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:The Simpsons
Self-nomination. See recent archived peer review. The portal is dynamic, with many randomized sections, and a couple others that are updated regularly by faithful members of The Simpsons WikiProject. All of the content used in Selected article and Selected episode is of WP:GA or WP:FA quality status only. There are at present (17) Selected articles, (24) Selected episodes, (20) "Did you know" entries, of which three are randomly shown at a time and they are all sourced, (10) Selected pictures, (40) Character quotes, and (18) Selected quotes from general commentators about the show. All of the above mentioned sections are randomized. Then the portal also has a few sections updated by WikiProject members, namely: Upcoming episode, News, and Featured content. Thank you for taking the time to take a look at the Portal. Cirt (talk) 18:05, 18 December 2007 (UTC).
