The FBI Buffalo Field Office is the FBI's division Field office in the Western New York Region, the Field Office in addition to being the FBI's Primary Field officer in the area also houses its own FBI Swat Division [1]

Their are three Separate Taskforces that operate within the FBI's Buffalo Division.

[edit] The Violent Crime Program

The Violent Crime Program - Which is composed of Officers/Agents from the: FBI, Internal Revenue Service (IRS), Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms (BATF), New York State Parole, New York State Police and the Buffalo Police Department [3] Who’s mission is to "Disrupt and Dismantle[4]" Gang Violence, the Violent Crime Program also handles all kidnappings, extortions, fugitives, bank robberies, and major thefts of interstate shipments in the Buffalo/Western New York Area.

[edit] The Joint Terrorism Task Force

Joint Terrorism Task Force - The Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) was founded during 2001 after the events of September 11th. Who's mission is to "prevent, detect, deter, and investigate attacks perpetrated by domestic and international terrorists in the Western District of New York [5]" The JTTF also investigates all criminal activities, including the acquisition and garnishment of funds, weapons, explosives, false identifications, and other means, undertaken by terrorists to function, in addition, the JTTF is comprised of investigative personnel from over twenty federal, state and local law enforcement and intelligence community agencies thought the Western New York area[6].

[edit] The Health Care Task Force

The Health Care Task Force - The Health Care Task Force was established for the sole purpose of investigating federal health care violations, The Health Care Task Force is made up of agencies that are from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Health and Human Services, United States Postal Inspection Service, Internal Revenue Service, Food and Drug Administration, United States Attorney's Office and the Department of Defense[7]. The Task Force works closely with private insurers and many other local and state law enforcement agencies to combat widespread fraud in the health care industry

The Buffalo Field Office has a total of two suspects that are wanted specifically by Buffalo, Those two suspects are:

Main article: Jaber A. Elbaneh

Jaber A. Elbaneh He is charged with providing material support to a terrorist organization and conspiring to provide material support, specifically to Al-Qaeda[8]. He was Captured in Yemen on May 20, 2007, but he is Still listed as wanted by the FBI as of February 29th, 2008 [9]. In addition to being wanted specifically by Buffalo he is also on the list of the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorists.

An Unknown bank robber [10] He is charged with robbery of the Xerox Federal Credit Union in Webster, New York, on August 12, 2003. He is also charged with Murder because, during the robbery, the man shot two people of which one died from the gunshot wounds.

[edit] Office of Public Affairs

The Office of Public Affairs - The Office of Public Affairs mission is to be to enhance and maintain public trust and confidence in the Federal Bureau of Investigation by widely sharing information externally about the FBI's mission, accomplishments, operations and values. [11]

The Office of Public Affairs is able to achieve their mission by facilitating the public release of information through liaison with the media, by making direct contact with the public through speeches, reports, public tours, correspondence, the Internet, and Community Outreach activities and by working with authors, television and film producers and other interested parties who seek to depict the FBI in their productions. [12]

The FBI Buffalo Field Office maintains two specific Specialty Programs; the Buffalo Division of the FBI Swat and three Evidence Response Teams.

[edit] FBI Swat

Main article: FBI Swat

FBI Swat - The Buffalo FBI Field office's [FBI swat team's mission is to "Employ specialized capabilities, weapons and tactics to conduct high risk arrests, specialized entries and security operations in support of Bureau, Division and case specific missions."[13] The FBI Swat team is organized into the following core elements:

  • Command
  • Assault
  • Sniper
  • Medical
  • Communications
  • Negotiations[14]

The FBI SWAT team is selected from the top officers at the Buffalo Field Office and must pass a tryout focusing on physical fitness, firearms skills, decision making ability under stressful conditions and ability to function well in a team environment [15], new operatives that make it onto the team are placed on a probationary status until specific criteria are met and they become full members of the SWAT team[16]. The Buffalo Division of the FBI Swat uses the same weapons that are used by every other FBI Swat team throughout the country including the: the MP-5/10 Submachine gun, the M-4 Assault Rifle, the Glock 22 Pistol (.40 cal), along with a variety of other weapons.[17]

[edit] Evidence Response Teams

Evidence Response Teams - The Buffalo FBI Field Office has a total of three Evidence Response Teams [18] which is composed of Special Agents and Professional Support Employees [19]. Each of the three teams is made of eight members each member of a ERT team is specially trained in crime scene management and investigation and in evidence collection and processing [20]. Each of the ERT teams is tasked with conducting crime scene investigations, performing specialized searches of crime scenes, as well as serving as the liaison between FBI Buffalo and the FBI's Laboratory [21]. The ERT is generally only deployed for crimes that fall under federal jurisdiction but at times, the ERT will assist local law enforcement agencies in processing local crime scenes upon request. [22]
