[edit] Boundaries

Faversham and Mid Kent covers sections of the Swale and Maidstone boroughs. The constituency includes the East of the Town of Maidstone. This caused much confusion amongst local residents when the boundaries were first changed in 1997 as the constituency named Maidstone and the Weald was retained but did not cover the entire town.

[edit] Boundary review

Following their review of parliamentary representation in Kent, the Boundary Commission for England has made major changes to the existing constituency boundaries as a consequence of population changes across the county.

For the most part in Faversham and Mid Kent, the changes simply re-align the constituency boundary to match electoral ward boundaries. The electoral wards used in the formation of the modified constituency are:

  • From the borough of Maidstone - Bearsted, Boughton Monchelsea & Chart Sutton, Boxley, Detling & Thurnham, Downswood & Otham, Harrietsham & Lenham, Headcorn, Leeds, North Downs, Park Wood, Shepway North, Shepway South and Sutton Valence & Langley.
  • From the borough of Swale - Abbey, Boughton & Courtenay, Davington Priory, East Downs, St. Ann’s and Watling.

[edit] History

In 1997 this constituency was formed when the previous Faversham was abolished and split into Sittingbourne and Sheppey and the town of Faversham which was then merged with Mid Kent to form this constituency.
