Fatima al-Fihri is the daughter of Mohammed al-Fihri, with whom she migrated to Fes, Morocco from Qairawan, located in present-day Tunisia. He was a wealthy businessman, and with the inheritance money, Fatima in 859 founded the oldest degree-granting university existing today, the University of Qarawiyyin. During the building of the university, she fasted to become closer to Allah.
