[edit] Early life

Fatima grew up in Somalia with her mother and two sisters. Her parents divorced at a young age. She underwent female genital mutilation when she was seven years old. Her two sisters were killed by the Somali army during the civil war. After her sisters’ deaths, Fatima and her mother fled to the United States when she was 13 for safety.[1] Fatima states she lived in a shack and had low self-esteem. She was a Posse Scholar[2] and went to Bryn Mawr College in 2004. She transferred over to New York University[3]to study pre-med and political science.[4] After finishing her season at top model, however, Fatima transfered back to Bryn Mawr to finish out her education.

[edit] America's Next Top Model

Fatima came into the competition with a powerful story to tell and a chance to inspire others. She placed third in her cycle. She received three first call-outs and four bottom-two appearances, the same amount as winner Whitney Thompson. She won one challenge, in which she received 50 extra frames. Fatima was criticized for not being able to take direction well. She was given a long, chestnut brown weave as part of her makeover. Fatima missed a photo shoot, unable to get her passport which she lost in Atlanta that almost cost her the competition, where she landed in the bottom two with Stacy Ann Fequiere. Her past performances and a strong portfolio saved her over Stacy Ann. She is the second girl to miss a photoshoot and be able to move on in the competition, the first being Shannon Stewart of Cycle 1 who was chosen over Robin Manning who also missed the same photoshoot. Fatima is the first girl to miss a photoshoot and be chosen over a girl who had done the photoshoot.

[edit] Post show

Fatima did an interview for People Magazine for the April 7, 2008 issue.[5] Fatima attended a CW Upfront party and the 2008 American Image Awards on May 14, 2008 in New York City along with fellow contestants Anya Kop and Whitney Thompson, sporting a new short hair-do.[6][7]

She also spoke openly about female genital circumcision and her hopes for changing the practice to make it "less horrendous" for young girls in an autobiography she submitted at Orato.com titled Vulnerable Beauty: Finding My Voice. [8]
