Father Michael McGivney Catholic Academy is a high school in Markham, Ontario, Canada. The school was founded by the York Catholic District School Board in 1989 and is named in honour of Michael J. McGivney, founder of Knights of Columbus.
The school has an enrollment of 1400 students ranging from grade 9 to 12. Being a Catholic school, it encourages an inclusive community of many cultures, rooted in the teachings of Jesus, to develop the full academic, spiritual and social potential of all students in partnership with home, church, and other communities, as builders of a just society. It receives students from the following Catholic Elementary Schools in Markham:
- St. Benedict
- St. Vincent De Paul
- St. Francis Xavier
- Mother Teresa
- Sir Richard W. Scott
Kathleen Westmaas became principal for the 2005-2006 school year and has continued her work through to the 2007-2008 year.
Notable alumni from this academy include:
- Katrina Florece (Class of 2001) (Appeared as Jubilee in X-Men (2000))
- Mike Zigomanis (Class of 2000) (NHL player drafted to Buffalo Sabres at age 19, currently plays for Phoenix Coyotes)
In 2003 the entire school was quarantined and closed due to a suspected case of the SARS virus. [1] [2]
