About Fast Rita"All people are created equal - some are just funnier than others." Hi there, I'm a full-time writer. A lot of my work involves research on totally dodgy cultural stuff; How warm is the Red Sea? (The warmest.) Which film was John Wayne starring in when they detonated a nuclear test nearby? ("The Conqueror" - he played Ghengis Khan!) You get the picture. Over the last year, Wikipedia has become my intellectual weapon of choice (along with Google, and a handful of magazines, newspapers and URLs like the Guardian UK, BBC, Virtual Tourist, The Information Clearing House, You Tube, The New Yorker, urbandictionary.com and gawker.com...) Because I roam a wide variety of subjects, I often notice errors and inconsistencies within obscure categories. I find the untidy nature of this information annoying - especially when it's a very small matter - like whether a picture is of the world's biggest dog, or a different one according to the breeder's website. I like to tidy up those little spills. That said - I'm reasonably thorough. I understand that the net is a fallible research tool and like to double check my sources... but since my work is mainly fiction, I can sometimes be guilty of sloppy referencing. This, and my lack of a university degree, means that I have trouble taking the Wikipedia credo "Be Bold" to heart. Nonetheless.... I admire the calm way many of the editors here deal with disputes. The gentle debate between User:Archola and an unnamed high school student with a strong opinion that Jesus Christ was a cult leader, and that Archola was a fascist - well - it was inspiring. In fact - Talk:Jesus provides my favourite talk page. Sometimes I browse it, just to listen to the various editors gently debate whether Jesus is gay, a bastard, a mythical creature... and tactfully remove references to "The Night of the Living Dead" and WalMart. It's the work of these tireless academics that make me want to be a better human being. So I've signed on here, officially, to let you know where I'm coming from - you know - in case my edits shit you.
