Talk:Farringdon, London

[edit] Etymology
"There are numerous places in England called Farringdon; all meaning fern covered hill." "fern covered hill" would be FearnDuun, out-side Wessex probably FernDuun. In the middle-English period, this woul be slackened to Ferndon, the o_ being slack. By 1600 this would be pronounced something like Fyrnd'n, non-rhotic, this being London. There is no possibility that Londoners could change Fern to Farring, and it highly unlikely that anywhere else Fern became Farn let alone Farring. The derivation from Fern is not feasible.
