Farragut, Brooklyn

Farragut is a neighborhood in the east central section of the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The area is part of Brooklyn Community Board 17.[1] Farragut is roughly bounded by Cortelyou Avenue and Holy Cross Cemetery to the north, Kings Highway to the east, Brooklyn Avenue on the west and the Long Island Rail Road to the south.[2]
The area was largely populated by Jews and Italians before 1950. In the 1980s, African Americans moved to the area, with many from Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and other Caribbean islands, reaching a majority by the 1990s.[2]
The neighborhood was named for American Civil War Admiral David Farragut.[2]
