Fareway is a retail grocery store chain based in Boone. Iowa. It has more than 95 stores, most of them in Iowa and a few in Nebraska and Illinois, and one in Minnesota. Founded by Fred Vitt and Paul Beckwith in 1938,[1] most Fareway locations are open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.,[2] although locations in Omaha, Nebraska open at 7 a.m. and close at 10 p.m. (but close at 9 p.m. during the Winter season).[3]

Services and departments such as dry cleaning and video rental are not present at Fareway stores.[1] Additionally, Fareway stores do not sell hard liquor such as vodkas, gins or whiskeys. Stores only sell beer, wine, malt beverages and wine coolers. Fareway sells USDA Choice grade beef, the U.S. Government's highest grade of beef that is normally available to American grocery stores, to go along with its groceries.[1]

Keeping with the original founders' religious beliefs, all Fareway locations are closed on Sundays and most holidays including Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year's Day; most stores close early on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve.[1]
