Fanny Parkes

Fanny Parkes was a daughter of a British colonial officer. She came to India as the wife of a minor civil servant. She lived in India for twenty-four years, 1822-1846, during which time she travelled extensively . She made many Indian friends and got herself involved in Indian custom and culture.

Fanny Parkes's husband was a mentally unstable junior official in charge of ice making in Allahabad. Her travelogue, Wanderings of a Pilgrim in Search of the Picturesque was first published in 1850. A recent revision of this work is also published by Penguin Books as Begums, Thugs & Englishmen, The Journals of Fanny Parkes, it was edited by William Dalrymple who also added an introduction to this book.
