Talk:Family name etymology
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The name 'Malone' means 'Servant of St. John,' but there are a number of them. If anyone knows which one, could you fix the link to point to his article, rather than the disambiguation page?
[edit] Reformat?
I would like to reformat this list to match Family name affixes, i.e. name (language origin) "etymology" notes. Any problem with that? Grika Ⓣ 18:15, 20 June 2006 (UTC)
[edit] wha...
Is this just a list where anyone who knows their (of others, I suppose) family name's origins add on? That could get rather long and tedious. If this is the case, is it really a useful article? If so, shouldn't this page have links to lists that segregate the names by origin? That would be more efficient. Though, I imagine some names that have evolved will have to refer to their origin page as well.... Considering how many names are in a phonebook, having every single etymology one a list would be quite a daunting thing. I think someone more aware of wiki procedure should review the practicality of this. Garnet avi 15:43, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
- After looking up deletion policy, I'm pretty sure this falls under WP:NOT, so I've nominated for deletion accordingly. Garnet avi 16:03, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
- seeing Category:Lists of etymologies (and German family name etymology in particular), we have a lot of similar lists. However, this needs a lot of work, and it cannot aspire to even be a comprehensive list. Seeing that it doesn't cite any sources anyway, I'd say we reduce it to a dab page at present. dab (𒁳) 13:56, 7 May 2007 (UTC)
