The Family Party is a political party in New Zealand. It describes itself as a Christian party.[1]
The Family Party was established by members of the disbanding Destiny New Zealand (the political party backed by the Destiny Church) and by Paul Adams, a former United Future MP. It was initially intended that they would join forces with Gordon Copeland, another former United Future MP now sitting as an independent, but talks fell through, and Copeland is establishing his own party.[2] There was speculation that Taito Phillip Field might also be involved, but he has not been announced as part of the Family Party.[2] The Family Party was announced in October 2007, and received official registration on 17 December.[3]
The party describes its support base as "pro-family, traditional Christian"[1] voters, and says that it will target Maori and Pacific Islander voters in South Auckland.[2][1]
Richard Lewis, former leader of Destiny New Zealand, is the Family Party's leader, while Adams is deputy leader.[1] The party president is Elias Kanaris[4]
