False Dmitriy

False Dmitriy (Russian: Лжедмитрий, Lžedmitrij) is the term used to denote any pretenders to the Russian throne who claimed to be the son of Ivan the Terrible, Tsarevich Demetrius, miraculously escaped the assassination attempt. False Dimitriys appeared in the Russian politics during the Time of Troubles. At that time there have been several people claiming to be the true Dimitriy; the most prominent were the following three:

Before and after the rigged election of Vladimir Putin's hand-picked successor Dmitry Medvedev as President of the Russian Federation in March 2008, some Russian political commentators began to sarcastically apply the term "False Dmitriy" to Medvedev, implying that this "succession" too is illegitimate.
