[edit] Biography

Falchion is a Finnish melodic heavy metal band which has got influences for example from Scandinavian death metal, viking metal, folk metal, neo-classical metal, progressive metal and nowadays even some thrash metal. In the beginning there were probably two notable Finnish metal albums whose created the idea of forming a melodic death metal band. These albums were Amorphis' Elegy (1996) and Ensiferum's same-titled debut album (2001).

In the spring of 2002 in Lahti, Finland there were 15 and 16-year-old guys named Juho Kauppinen (guitars & vocals) and Joonas Simonen (keyboards). Before making own songs they had first played mainly Stratovarius and Amorphis cover songs together since the year 2000 and a bit later got an interest about to come up with their own songs. They started to look for a drummer at first and they got Ville Vehviläinen (currently plays in Waltari) as a drummer for the band in the spring of 2002. So, Falchion was formed and at first band was containing only vocals, guitar, keyboards and drums. It took a while until the entire line-up was finished. Seppo Tiaskorpi joined Falchion as a bass player in the end of 2002 and Falchion got a second guitar player as well in the spring of 2003. Back then there was an idea of recording a demo cd with the entire line-up.

The first four songs for Falchion were made in 2002-2003 and the demo-cd would consist of the songs. In that time band had two composers: Juho and Joonas that were both influenced about Finnish melodic metal. Falchion started to record a four-track demo-cd in June 2003 in Lahden yhteiskoulu which was the upper secondary school Juho and Joonas were studying in. The person responsible of recording and mixing was Juha Kallas. The recordings of a demo-cd seemed to last for eternity for personal reasons, but the demo was still ready in November 2003. During the recordings of the demo the band's line-up changed because Joonas, Sami and Ville wanted to part ways with the band. Teemu Peltonen came as the new drummer for the band and Jani Laine replaced Sami as the second guitar player. Back then the band decided to continue without keyboard player and thought their sound would be based on guitar walls and melody lines. Also the responsibility of composing transfered exclusively to Juho's shoulders and since then Falchion has been more or less Juho's own band.

The demo cd got quite a positive response from some internet media and in December 2003 Falchion scored a record deal offer from Japanese label World Chaos Production and signed a one-album record contract with the label. By the time band was absolutely excited about the next summer of 2004 and the new album recordings they had just booked. World Chaos Production wanted the band to record an album containing at least eight songs and 35 minutes running time. Then Juho started to write songs quite quickly with the eagerness of youth and in the spring of 2004 Falchion had already nine songs and 48 minutes to record. The recordings for the debut album started in June 2004 in Studio Watercastle, Jyväskylä, Finland with Arttu Sarvanne. The recordings lasted nine days and Arttu Sarvanne was there to add a professional touch to the recordings. He mixed album for eight days and in the beginning of July album was ready to be mastered. The album was mastered in October by Timo Lehtimäki in Studio 57, Kronoby, Finland.

Just after the album was ready, Juho joined Korpiklaani as an accordion player in October 2004 and Falchion was quiet for a while because Korpiklaani took that much time and actually Falchion had already decided to wait the debut album "Legacy of Heathens" to come out before performing any live concerts. The album "Legacy of Heathens" came out on 15th of October 2005, exactly one year later than the mastering session. So the delay in releasing the album affected the band motivation as well, but Juho had never had an idea to quit Falchion. "Legacy of Heathens" got rather encouraging reviews in the internet media, but also a few not very positive and criticizing. In the autumn of 2005 Juho had moved from Lahti to Tampere where most of the Korpiklaani members lived and Falchion never rehearsed in Lahti area again.

In the summer of 2006, nearly one year after the release of the album "Legacy of Heathens" Juho decided to change the whole line-up, because Falchion hadn't practiced together for one year and members lived so far from each other. In August 2006 Juho had a conversation with his friend Sampsa Savijärvi about the new visions of the band. The vision was to find a new line-up from Tampere area which will be ready to rehearse often and record a new album soon. Sampsa himself became a guitar player and asked his friend Miikka Tulimäki to join the band as a third guitar player with a lot of motivation. Matti Johansson from Korpiklaani was also interested about to join the band as a drummer like he had previously played melodic death metal music in Crystalic as well and he thought this would be a good side project where to express himself beside Korpiklaani. The new bass player was also Sampsa's friend Janne Kielinen. Unfortunately Sampsa had to leave the band soon because he noticed his main musicial ambitions are studies with classical guitar and vocals. Falchion started to rehearse in the autumn of 2006 and Falchion played it's first show in Turku, Finland in February 2007 with Eternal Tears of Sorrow.

Juho had had some break about making songs for Falchion because Falchion was unsigned back then and by the time he composed totally eleven songs for three Korpiklaani albums named "Tales Along This road" (2006), "Tervaskanto" (2007) and "Korven kuningas" (2008) and performed over 150 shows with Korpiklaani during 2005-2007. After the very important album recordings of "Korven kuningas" in the autumn of 2007 Juho started to compose music for the new Falchion album.

In December 2007 Falchion booked Adamantium Studios in Tampere to record a new album in March 2008. The new album will include nine tracks and about 47 minutes of new material. Material for the album is made in the years 2004 and 2006-2008.
