This family existed during the Carboniferous period. These were sharks resembling a dogfish with bizarre large spines emerging from the back above the pectoral girdle and bent over the head. These seem to have been part of the sexual mating display of the mature male sharks, because those with spines also had claspers. It contained one genus:
