The Fakir Mohan University which was carved out of the Utkal University was established by the Government of Orissa in 1989 acts as an affiliating university and aims to provide higher education through linkages with number of colleges and institutes around the state. Presently the university has more than 500 colleges and 3.5 lakhs students at the graduate and postgraduate levels. This university became the largest University from the point of view of the numerical strength of colleges and students in India.

The University has well organized Computer Lab., Biotechnology Lab. and Environmental Science Lab. Besides its Lab in the Dept. of Population Studies is adequate and as per needs. Each Dept. has adequate connectivity facilities. Welfare facilities like Bank, Canteen etc. are also there in the present campus.
