Fake Train was the first album released on Kill Rock Stars by the Olympia, Washington based group Unwound. It was recorded and mixed in two weekends. Though it was the first widely-available album by the group, Unwound had recorded an eponymous debut which would see release in 1995. Fake Train also marks the first full length album by Unwound to feature Sara Lund on drums, replacing her friend Brandt Sandeno.

The cover image is a vandalized copy of the 1970 album Tom by Tom Jones. Since Fake Train was one of the first musical releases on KRS (and the first full-length studio album), the "killing" of Jones can be viewed as a mission statement, living up to the label's name.

Three songs were accidentally placed on track 4 due to a pressing plant error; however, the band regularly played them live in order, as a "trilogy."

"Dragnalus" also appeared on the soundtrack to the indie film Half-Cocked, which was released on Matador Records in 1995. "Feeling$ Real" concludes with Justin Trosper screaming, "The... world... starts... coming... down," with the last word suddenly cut off.
